It’s Now “THANK YOU” Drive Month

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. The “pay Temira for forecasting” drive is over (but if you want to get on the email list, make a donation of $12 or more by clicking on the sun) so now I’m asking for thank you notes for the rest of July! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free and written by some paid NOAA chick!” Free, yes. Written by some paid chick, no, unless people donate. But you’ve all been so generous this month with donations that I’m just asking for thank you notes for the last week of July. A note won’t get you on the mailing list, but it will make my day. I’ll smile. Maybe I’ll cry. Why? Because I like to be appreciated more than you can appreciate. So, send me a quick email using complete sentences, telling me why you use this forecast, and you’ll make my day. Truly. And probably make your day too. (Fine print: I must get one thank you note per day or I will not post a forecast the next day.)

Temira’s random morning thoughts
I was up late. I haven’t had coffee. I dripped boiling water on my toes while filling my French Press. Or rather, I would have dripped boiling water on my toes had I not been high-pouring my French Press. The boiling water, after accelerating at 9.8 m/s^2 through the air of my kitchen, had reached “merely warm” by the time it impacted my toes.

Wind forecast
Wow. Smokey air and convective debris. Interesting start to the morning. .09 gradient is also an interesting start. Remember what I said about the weather models? They said NO WIND this morning. Guess it’s back to gut instinct for me. My gut, surely a questionable source of information, says you can expect the wind to build to gusty 21-24 today near Hood River, filling in at Stevenson & Doug’s this afternoon, with less wind further east. There is a chance of a short-lived, very strong burst of wind late in the afternoon. There’s also a significant chance of thunderstorms after 2pm today. Those thunderstorms will impact wind quality and speed, so you can add a star after 3pm to all those numbers.
As the offshore upper low moves east tomorrow, we’ll see the wind pick up from a mid-twenties start to a 30+ afternoon. Best/Steadiest/Strongest wind will likely be Lyle-Maryhill, as the low meanders eastward.
Leftover low effects leave the Gorge in westerly flow Friday, with 22-25. Sorry, not gonna make a weekend call yet.
In other wind news, I keep forgetting to mention that Northwave did a lovely job replacing my 3.5 window so I could see again. In honor of me being able to see barges and not run folks over, we’re having a sale: 15% off all window replacements at Northwave through August 29th.

Other random Gorge news
For you cyclists and hikers, take note that SDS, Longview, and Kreps land will close at the end of the day Friday due to fire danger. So, Whoopdee Trail, Hospital Hill, and East Ridge or Puke Hill trails are all closed until further notice. Please spread the word and respect the landowners’ wishes so we can keep using these awesome trails. If you are caught up there, you risk a trespassing citation and you will jeapordize access for everyone. Don’t do it.
Tonight offers lots of choices in sports land: Warm up at 4pm at Flow with Karma Yoga, by donation.
At 5:30, take your kids to Family Man for family-friendly mountain biking. Meet at the bottom of Post Canyon Road to ride up, or meet at Family Man if your kids can’t ride that far. The lady mountain bikers meet tonight for the Post n’ Pinot ride at Dirty Fingers, with a raffle and a glass of wine for all the finishers.
The Kayak Shed’s shop paddle is at 5:30 at Husum, with runs down the Middle and Lower White Salmon. The river’s at 2.2′ or so, meaning the Cave Wave is in and surfing great! Finally, there’s sailboat racing out of the Hood River Marina tonight. Maybe not the best activity with big thunderstorms in the forecast?
