It’s Now “THANK YOU” Drive Month
Thanks for coming here for your forecast. I’m done asking for donations (but if you want to get on the email list, make a donation of $12 or more by clicking on the sun) so now I’m asking for thank you notes for the rest of July! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free and written by some paid NOAA chick!” Free, yes. Written by some paid chick, no, unless people donate. But you’ve all been so generous this month with donations that I’m asking for thank you notes for the last week of July. A note won’t get you on the mailing list, but it will make my day. I’ll smile. Maybe I’ll cry. Why? Because I like to be appreciated more than you can appreciate. So, send me a quick email using complete sentences, telling me why you use this forecast, and you’ll make my day. And probably make your day too.
Tomorrow’s forecast status – will be updated after I’m done windsurfing, duh!:
Good morning,
Here is a statistic for kicking off the work week. Facebook posts with photos tend to generate 58% more likes than your average post. Next up, what is the best time to post? Best day to post? How often? And the questions continue. MARiASH MARKETiNG will not only help you with each, yet also help you build a plan to execute a successful strategy for growth with engaged users and loyal fans. Call us today to get started. Temira’s random morning thoughts
Oh look. It’s windy. Again.
I should have put a star in the wind graph yesterday directing everyone to my concerns about the passing upper level shortwave in the forecast discussion. I sailed for a bit at *****. It was bizarre. Truly bizarre. My friend Bob came off the water, and spoke two words: “Devil Wind”. Close. No fallen angels were involved, just a passing weather system making things gusty.
Wind forecast
That *weather system (it’s so weak you can’t even see it) is still around today. But we have another deep marine push, and we have even bigger gradients than we did yesterday: .15/.06. So, let’s call it gusty 25-29 this morning from the Hatch to Mosier (Mosier and Bingen actually looked pretty good yesterday), with 15-20 further east. We may see a brief period of “nukin’” as well. As the clouds burn off and high pressure builds, the wind will likely back off to 23-26 (maybe a touch less) this afternoon, but it will fill all the way from Stevenson to The Dalles. The eastern Gorge will see upper teens today.
Tomorrow brings a bit of a respite from the wind as high pressure builds across the state. The 4/3 model says we’ll see 15-18 early, fading quickly to zero wind, and then coming back at 10-15 in the afternoon. Given the bigger picture at 12k, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the westerlies stick around at 13-16 all day, despite the accurate 4/3’s assurance of a light wind day.
Wednesday looks like W 13-15, and then stronger west wind is modeled to return on Thursday. Sorry, Brad U.

Bike News
In biking news tonight, there are two group rides going on. The Ride around the Gorge folks are riding to Lost Lake. Meet at Hood River Organics in Dee at 5:30 to join that ride. This is normally a “recovery” ride, but tonight’s ride is 3300′ of climbing in 28 miles. Definitely bring your spandex and clipless pedals.
If you’re looking for something more mellow, you won’t find mellower than this: it’s Booze Cruise night at Mountain View Cycles. Meet at the shop at 6:30 for a mellow ride to Mosier’s Thirsty Woman Pub and back. Leave the spandex and clipless pedals at home and bring lights and a helmet. My suggestion is that you eat French Fries at the TW, because they are the best fries on the planet. My other suggestion is that you bring a cold can of beer, because the ride stops at the overlook to toast to Tom Selleck and his mustache (you’ll have to go on the ride to find out why).
Very Important News
Coming up tomorrow night, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30, and there’s the Columbia Gorge Triathlon Club’s weekly practice. Last week they moved it to Rowena, and they’ll probably do that this week too, due to crowded conditions at the Event Site.
Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s the Opti Pacific Northwest Sailboat championships in Cascade Locks, there’s the Bridge of the Gods Kite Festival in Stevenson, and there’s the Wildside Relay downwind SurfSki and Outrigger Canoe paddling race (I believe that’s in Stevenson). Also starting next Sunday, it’s the Delta Aquarids meteor shower.
Have an awesome day today!
