5/17 Gorge wind and events

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

This morning’s amusing ad:

The Canfield Brothers Yelli Screamy
Really Temira, seriously? You’re advertising a bike? A random bike we’ve never heard of? A freakin’ hardtail? Yes, I am, and I’m doing it because I love this bike. So does Jason Wells, who built GP for you. This bike is the Post Canyon destroyer. Slack head tube for descending.29″ wheels for rolling over stuff. Very, very, very short chainstays for fast responding bike action that’ll make you giggle. And yell. And scream. I slay the Gorge on this bike. You should too.Contact sean@canfieldbrothers.com for more info. We’ll have a demo day in late June. Stay tuned.

Let’s talk about rain. Rain is supposed to happen a lot in spring, and it’s been notably absent this year. Not last night. We’ve had .27” of rain so far today. That should be enough to make the trails less dusty. Hooray! There’s more rain in the forecast – a few showers today, more rain Sunday, and – if the long range models are correct – lots of rain in the middle of next week.

Next, it’s national bike to work day. If you’re a normal human (not like me), you should ride your bike to work today. If I did that, I’d be riding from my couch to my living room table, no more than ten feet, and that would just be weird.

In other bike news, last night was the Short Track race in Cascade Locks, and it was super fun. 70 people showed up. You should show next week. In other bike news, next weekend is the Enduro race in Post Canyon. But… next Thursday is the pre-race free shuttle at Dirty Fingers. You will need to call and get on that shuttle list soon. And more importantly, next Saturday is the DF post-race prom. Yes, prom. Get to work on your dress.

Coming up this weekend for the big Canadian and American holidays, we have Gorge Cup windsurfing races in Hood River on Saturday. There’s also the Carson to Stevenson Ridge Run on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Windance hosts a CGWA multi-sport swap meet – if you’re a wind sport person, make sure you join CGWA or CGKA while you’re there.

We should have plenty of wind for all the visitors this weekend: I thought we’d see dawn patrol at Doug’s today, but it’s doing dawn patrol at Arlington. I guess we’re still waiting for the front to pass. The wind should pick up later to gusty 23-26 through the whole Gorge. Tomorrow starts with 13-15 from Hood River eastward, 25-29 from Mosier eastward in the afternoon. Sunday brings west wind at 26-30. Monday doesn’t look all that windy, but Tuesday looks like a nuker.

Have an awesome day today!
