GORGE WIND FORECAST

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! It’s Tuesday, and not much is happening in terms of wind. That means you can get a lot done in terms of everything else. On Wednesday and Thursday, there might be just enough east wind, perhaps 20mph, to get a few of you out there (remember you need more wind on easterlies due to the current and wind going in the same direction). On Friday, solid westerlies are in the Gorge wind forecast thanks to a cold front moving through. This isn’t an ideal setup, but it’s definitely good enough! Lighter westerlies linger into Saturday. Beyond that, model agreement isn’t great, and from Tuesday on, model agreement completely falls apart and there’s no forecasting possible!
Looking at Tuesday… it’s an easy forecast. Gradients started nearly flat โ 30.10/30.09/30.10 โ and they won’t change much. Easterlies build to 10-13mph for a few hours at Viento and Stevenson mid-morning before dropping below 10mph this afternoon. Iwash/Rooster Rock will be light/variable all day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 57-109kcfs, river temp is 65.7F, and high temp forecast is 81 degrees and sunny.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Wednesday looks like the strongest east wind day of the bunch, and even it won’t be all that strong. Early wind will be 20ish mph at Stevenson and 25ish mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock. A few hours of easterlies at that strength are all you get; after 11:30am or so, the wind declines. Final readings: 10mph at Iwash Rock and 10-15mph at Stevenson. High temp: 81 and sunny.
On Thursday, we’ll have a short round of 15-18mph easterlies at all the usual east wind spots (Stevenson, Home Valley, Viento, and Iwash). Once again, a couple hours are allotted before the wind declines. End of day: light/variable at Iwash and E 10mph at Stevenson and Viento. High temp: 82 degrees and mostly sunny.
A cold front moves through on Friday and drives a round of solid west wind, yay! Ahead of this incoming system, we should see mid-20s from Stevenson to Mosier. After the system moves through, the western Gorge drops, and areas to the east build to the mid-to-upper 20s. Timing and strength aren’t yet solidified, but that’s the general picture. Fingers crossed that my back can handle it cuz I would loooooove to paddle. Things are still not-awesome here in herniated disc land. I recommend you not do this to yourself!
On Saturday, we’ll see light to moderate westerlies of some sort โ models are all over the place on wind strength. It’ll be even lighter on Sunday and Monday โ even the direction isn’t quite clear. Starting Tuesday, there’s way too much uncertainty to even hazard a guess about strength or direction. So we’ll leave it there for now. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Warm, sunny weather continues through Thursday. Not much to say about that other than the fact that we’re warmer than normal by 10 to 20 degrees depending on location. Temps normalize as we move into the weekend thanks to a cold front that opens the door for colder, drier Canadian air to drop in from the NNE. Frost chances will be widespread in the Saturday through Monday morning window, which means it may be too cold to sleep with your windows open! More on that later. More on the frost, I mean, not the windows.
Tuesday morning’s only frost was in Glenwood, where once again it was 32 degrees. Good job, Glenwood. Everyone else was in the low 40s to mid 50s to start the day. Afternoon temps rise to 80-85 degrees, warmest in The Dalles, which beats the desert temps this time of year, but never beats dessert. Dessert is always better than The Dalles! Today’s wind will be generally light/variable, but we will see easterlies at 10mph near Stevenson, Viento, and in the hills.
Wednesday and Thursday are so nearly-identical that we can have one forecast for two days! Expect two sunny days. Most places will have calm wind in the morning. Exceptions: the usually-windy east wind spots between Iwash/Rooster Rock and Viento will have easterlies at 20-25mph in the morning both days. Wednesday afternoon sees the wind drop to 10-15mph in those spots. Thursday afternoon brings lighter wind. Both days see high temps from 80 to 86, hottest (duh) in The Dalles.
On Friday, a weather system brings cooler temps and a little drizzle under cloudy sky west of Hood River. Models are all over the place on high temps for Friday โ anything from 65-78 for The Dalles. Friday will also be windy: 25mph west of The Dalles in the morning and east of The Dalles in the afternoon. That’s just a rough forecast for the wind โ details are still being worked out. Much cooler weather is forecast on Saturday, when highs will only reach the mid 60s.
Now, let’s talk about frost! Frost is not too likely Saturday morning thanks to lingering clouds and west wind, but the most sheltered areas that end up with clear sky could see frost. Most likely: Glenwood, Dufur, and perhaps Parkdale. Lighter wind Sunday morning puts folks away from the Nch’i Wana at higher risk, but we may still have some cloud cover protecting us. 850mb temps will be down around 1C Sunday morning, so anyone with clear sky, 1000’+, away from the Nch’i Wana could drop below 36. Widespread frost is likely Monday morning as 850mb temps drop to 0C or less, the sky clears, and dewpoints will be under 30 degrees all across the Gorge. Anyone at 500’+ is at risk. We’ll sort out the details of all this as we get closer. If you have a garden, you should take steps to protect it if you can. Safe travels. -TATAS
