Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

The Forecast

Mt. Hood Forecast

Happy day of Christmas Eve! It’s going to be another sunny, parked-out day on the slopes of Mt. Hood. Thankfully, the weather will be the same all day, so you can go up early or go up later. It’s all good. Snow returns for Christmas Day and the day after, and then we’re back to a few days of sunshine. Sounds like good shredding conditions to me!

Thursday looks sunny all day with above-freezing temps. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the evening, and 4500′ after midnight. High temps will be in the upper 30’s. Wind: SW 10-25 early, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and SW 20-35 overnight.

Snow starts up around 7am on Friday and continues all the way through the next 24 hours. Merry Christmas! The snow level will be 4500′ early, 3500′ midday, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day, for 3-4” of increasingly dense new snow. A period of mixed precip is not out of the question. Overnight, about 0.4” WE falls, for 3-4” of increasingly light snow. It’s not out of the question that this will start as mixed precip. Wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, SW 25-50 in the afternoon, SW 20-40 overnight.

Snowfall continues on Saturday morning and tapers off in the afternoon. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight under clear sky. About 0.5” WE falls during the day for 5” of powder. A trace falls in the evening, perhaps. Wind: SW 20-40 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, light and variable after midnight. Sunday and Monday: clear and sunny and sub-freezing on the slopes.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

River flow: 151kcfs. River temp: 44. Air temp: 40. Friday will be rainy, but it’ll still be windy. Easterlies hold at 35-40 at Rooster, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. High temp: 36. Saturday will be sprinkly with very gusty westerlies. Early morning wind will still be E 10-15 near Stevenson. Afternoon: W 10-13 in some places and gusty 18-22 in others (Viento, Celilo, Maryhill). Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
