Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Merry Christmas! The mountain received about 6” of snow in the last 24 hours with .91” water value. There was a warm period last night resulting in some rain and freezing rain. For today, the mountain will see an inch or two of snow. The snow level will be 0′ (these snow levels are for the Gorge / Mt. Hood area, not for the western valleys). Wind will be NW 25 in the morning, WNW 20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Tuesday starts off with low and mid level clouds with sunshine up high. High clouds move in during the afternoon and snow falls starting around 10pm. The snow level will be 0′. About .2” water value (WV) falls overnight, for 2-3” of snow. Wind will be NW 10-15 early, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 35 overnight.

Wednesday looks snowy with orographic effects wringing moisture out of mid and low-level clouds. The snow level will be 0′. We’ll see about .4” WV during the day, for 4-5” of snow. Another .3” falls overnight, for 3-4” snow. Wind will be NW 25-30 all day, dropping to W 20 overnight. Thursday currently looks cloudy during the day with heavy rain overnight.

Random Morning Thoughts

Our minds often feel like they are not under our control. We just go along what is happening, swept up in a wave of emotions and thoughts like a swimmer in a rip tide. Much like a drowning swimmer, we can break out of the stream by swimming across, rather than into it.

One possible reaction to our minds is to notice if we’re feeling good or bad in reaction to the thoughts and emotions. If we’re driving, for example, and we start cursing the drivers around us, we can notice how that makes us feel. The likely answer is “tense, unhappy, and irritated,” none of which feels particularly good.

We can then choose a different approach that feels better. We can say, “Gosh, it’s cozy here in my car,” or “Geez, that other driver looks stressed. I hope they’re doing okay.” We can even wave and smile at other people stuck in traffic. We can shrug at the futility of the situation.

‘Cuz here’s the thing: we’re not powerless in the face of our reactions. We’re going along with them, for sure, but we can learn to separate our awareness from our mind. And that will give us the power to think, feel and react in different ways. You can practice it today with the snow and ice on the ground – you can choose to be annoyed, delighted, amused, bemused, or anything else. Merry Christmas. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have east wind at (guessing – sensor is iced up) 35mph this morning. The wind will drop to E 15-20 this afternoon and then pick back up to E 40. Tuesday looks like E 40 all day. Wednesday looks like E 20-25 ealry, 10-15 in the afternoon and 40 after midnight.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’ll have continued light snowfall under cloudy sky until midday and then cloudy weather. Temps will be in the low 20’s this morning and somewhere less than freezing this afternoon. Tuesday will be dry for much of the day with light snowfall after 9pm. 1” of new max. Temps will be in the upper 20’s all day. Wednesday looks snowy, unless something changes dramatically. Temps will be in the upper 20’s all day (NWS’ computer-generated forecast says 42 for a high, but that seems unlikely). We’ll see 2-4” of snow in Hood River on Wednesday.
