Wednesday/Thursday. First days of Autumn.

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

At 6am this morning (no, not the cat – my alarm clock), the air was mostly still through the Gorge with a few spots reading W 5-10. Gradients, however, were large enough to indicate we’ll see more wind later on: .06 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). Expect 10-13 for the Dawn Patrol time period, slowly picking up to 13-16 midday near Hood River and 21-24 mid-afternoon from Stevenson out to The Dalles, and possibly Rufus too. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with a trough of low pressure off the coast and an upper low off BC. That’ll set us up for some light easterlies in the 13-16 range during the morning near Rooster and Steven’s Locks. The wind will go calm midday, and then switch to W 10-13 as a weak front approaches in the afternoon.

That weather system moves through early Friday morning, leaving us with leftover westerlies at 16-19 or so from Swell all the way to Arlington. This kind of setup generally sees the eastern Gorge wind back off during the afternoon, so your best chance for wind, likely in the 20-23 range, will be from Swell to Doug’s. The wind should last pretty much all day.

Models are still not agreeing on what will happen over the weekend, and that makes it very hard for me to give you a rough guess for your weekend planning. As of this morning, the GFS says we’ll see 15-18 or so both Saturday and Sunday. I wish I could give you an update tomorrow, but I’m taking the day off. Sorry…

Out on the coast, there’s not much going on unless you’re looking for light wind and small surf (north/central/south)… Today: Light south wind, W swell 5′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: Light wind, W 6′ @ 10. Friday: 5-10/15-20/25-30, W 6 @ 10.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, no. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Friday, 10-13. Sauvie’s the next three days: no wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine and I were talking yesterday about making decisions using our heads or our hearts. It’s a cliché to say, “Listen to your heart,” and it’s an annoying, woo-woo cliché at that. But listening to our hearts works, and I’ve been trying to understand why.

When we think about a problem, we create stories. Sometimes we create stories with the words “should” and “must” and “have to”. Those are not our stories; those are other people we’ve incorporated into our minds. When we listen to those head-stories, we can get lost in the noise of the needs and desires of others.

If we turn inward, instead, and listen to our bodies, we’ll see our emotional reaction when we think about taking a certain path: sadness, joy, anticipation, excitement, terror… Those feelings are our real reactions to different options. And when we see feelings, we can explore what they’re about. That leads us to understand our reactions to possible options on a very deep level, and allows us to make choices in full awareness.

Try it. Think about an upcoming decision. Look inward and make a list of the feelings. Explore each of those by connecting with it more deeply. Ask yourself, about each feeling, “What’s this about?” And when you have a better understanding of the complexity of the decision you’re contemplating, you can make a choice. From the heart. Fully aware. And whatever you choose, it will be the right choice for you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s very chilly out there this morning: 40 degrees at Larry’s house, aka Hood River Weather. If you’d like more degrees than that, you can wait until later when it’ll be in the mid-70’s and sunny. Light wind early, moderate late. Tomorrow starts off clear with temps in the upper 40’s and warms up to high overcast with temps in the low 80’s. Light wind. Friday starts off partly cloudy with a very, very, very slight chance of showers. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon with moderate wind. No rainbows for the three day period.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, our chance of rain out of the Thursday/Friday system are diminishing, and that means our chances for tacky dirt soon are also diminishing. And our chances for a big flush of chanterelles. Ah well. Can’t control the weather, can we? Go out and enjoy the fact that you have trails in your backyard! As for road biking, tomorrow looks spectacular with light wind and partly cloudy sky.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday today, and that means there’s plenty to do if you’re looking for something this evening. At 5:30, it’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride from Dirty Fingers. Come ride with a bunch of cool women for a couple of hours and then head back to the shop for a glass of wine and a raffle. Tomorrow night is the race-pace Post n’ Pint ride – same place, same time. If you’re looking for a race to do, Cooper Spur is hosting a cyclocross race on the 4th of October. There’s also free Tai Chi tomorrow night at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30.

Other events tonight include ping pong at the Hood River Armory and sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina.

Coming up this weekend, Northwest Trails Alliance has a shuttle day at Sandy Ridge – that’s a rare opportunity to avoid riding up that long, paved road. Sunday is a fundraiser run for the HRVHS Cross-country team. That’s at 9 at Kickstand coffee.

Have an awesome day today!
