Wednesday. YEEEEEHAAAAWWWW! Powder! Frozen waterfalls. Pure awesome.

SolsticeRainbow
I’m having a hard time sitting still right now. I want to jump up and stand in the lift line and get first chair on what’s going to be an off-the-charts kind of epic powder day. I’m not sure how long it’s been since we had a stretch of snow like this, but it’s been a long, long time. Meadows is reporting (hey, that’s me) 12.5 feet of snow so far this winter. Crystal has had 17 feet of snow so far this winter. This is purely ridiculous and totally awesome. I don’t think you can go wrong today: every single resort in the Cascades is going to be awesome. Timberline, Meadows, and Skibowl, home of the best nachos on Mt. Hood, will all be happy. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

The ridiculousness and awesomeness continues on Mt. Hood all day, with steady snowfall all day long, tapering off a bit tonight. The snow level today will be around 1000′ all day. We’ll see 1” water value (WV) between 7am and 4pm, for 10-14” of new snow. We’ll see another .5” WV by tomorrow morning, for 4-6” of additional snow. Wind today will be rough, but probably not lift-stopping: WNW 45 in the morning, turning to W 40 in the afternoon and evening.

Tomorrow starts out with more snowfall, but should clear up by the afternoon. The snow level will be 500-1000′ all day. We’ll see .4” WV during the day tomorrow, mostly before noon, for 4-5” of new snow. Then we’ll see clear sky in the afternoon and evening. Wind tomorrow will be WSW 25 early, turning to W 30 midmorning and WNW 25 in the afternoon and evening.

Finally, there’s an easy forecast: Friday will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be between 0′ and 500′ all day. Wind will be WNW 25 early and NW 20 in the evening. Saturday looks clear and cold with light and variable wind. Sunday looks clear and cold to start with a few inches of snow possibly overnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If it were a summer day and we had the gradients we have this morning – .11 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) – I’d tell you to pack up and head to Doug’s or Maryhill. We’ll see west wind today at 23-26 from The Dalles eastward with gusty 13-16 in the western Gorge. Tomorrow starts off with W 7-10 and picks up to W 13-16 midday from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Christmas brings west wind at 10-13, and Saturday looks like E 50. We’ll see some frozen waterfalls return by Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I feel like one of those super bouncy balls this morning. I’m so excited to go skiing today that I can barely sit still and write this forecast. The anticipation is killing me!

It’s hard not to get excited on days like this. It’s hard to contain our excitement about anything we’re eagerly awaiting. It feels pretty good to be excited, right? Well, I’d argue that it feels better to full appreciate the present moment, but that’s a story for a different day.

Excitement about the future means we’re not quite living in the present. For example, I just ate one of the cookies I made for my friend Hans, and because I was so excited about going to visit him and his resort today, I barely noticed the delicious cookie. Now I’m going to have to eat another, and that’ll be one less for my friend.

Another problem with anticipation is that we can end up being disappointed when reality doesn’t meet our hopes. So, it’s important, if we’re going to get all riled up, to be okay with whatever outcome arises. And it’s important to be able to set our excitement aside and be fully present when we need to be. Otherwise we’ll miss a lot of precious present moments, like the joy of an early-morning task well done, the companionship on the drive to the resort, or the taste of Hans’ buttery chocolate chip cookies.

So, go ahead and get riled up about today, and about Christmas, and about everything else. But make sure you enjoy the present moment too. There’s a lot of magic right here, right now, wherever you are. Life, as we sometimes forget, is awesome all the time. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just wandered outside to check the weather, and I couldn’t see any stars, the moon, or even any UFO’s. It is UFO day – when I visited Area 51 about 20 years ago, the folks at the Ale-inn told me that the UFO flights happened on Wednesday. I highly recommend visiting Rachel, Utah sometime. Anyway, back to your forecast: Expect a mostly cloudy day today with sunbreaks, lots of rain, and decreasing rain tonight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. Icy roads tonight. 99% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off with a mix of snow and rain at river level, tapering to showers in the afternoon. It’ll be mostly cloudy early with a few sunbreaks, and then the Nothing will likely arrive in the late afternoon or evening. Temps will be right around freezing in the morning – a small drop could leave us with an inch or two of snow at river level, but that seems unlikely given the west wind. Upper valleys, enjoy your snow! Temps in the afternoon will rise to the upper 30’s. Light west wind. Very icy roads in the morning and evening. 14% chance of rainbows (it’s probably too cold for rainbows.)

It looks like we’ll have the Nothing on Christmas morning, followed by partly cloudy sky on Christmas afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. Icy roads. No rainbows.

As of right now, it’s looking like we’ll stay below freezing at least through Tuesday. Frozen waterfalls are likely, as are icy roads. In addition, it’s quite likely we’ll see an inch or two of snow on Sunday night.

Much too wet, unless you’re riding gravel roads or pavement. Thanks for being nice to our trails. If you want to be in the woods, hiking is always nice. Or you can contact your local trail builder and offer to do some maintenance. Please ask before working. Each trail has an adopter.

Upcoming Events

There’s a community meditation at Flow Yoga this morning at 8:15. I’d go, but I’m going to shred powder instead. Maybe I’ll meditate on the drive up and over. I can’t tell you which events are on and which are off for the next two days. So let’s all skip the yoga and Tai Chi and all the other free events and go skiing and snowboarding!

Have an awesome day today!
