Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a bit of a complicated day in the region, as you can tell by the dissipating smoke, the scattered convective clouds, and just the general feeling of change in the air. A low pressure trough is approaching, bringing cooler marine air to the west side, and a weak frontal system is lined up at behind that. The 6am gradients were .14 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) with river flow of 122kcfs at The Dalles and a river temp of 70 degrees. The fish counts for yesterday aren’t up yet, but there were over 7000′ fall Chinook at Bonneville a couple days back.
With all these complications, wind quality and strength will likely be impacted today. Let’s start with the GFS prediction: 26-30 right off the bat from Viento to The Dalles with 28-32 from Cascade Locks to Arlington this afternoon, all the way through sunset. Given the complex weather picture, here’s my best guess: 20-24 early between Viento and The Dalles with 14-18 in other locations except Arlington, which will be in the 10-13 range early. By midday, we should have rangy, up-and-down 25-29 between Viento and Rufus. Periods of 28-32 are possible in that stretch of river, especially near Avery, the Maryhill grain elevators, and Doug’s, but also near Swell and Hood River if we’re really lucky. After the clouds burn off in the western Gorge, Stevenson will join in with 23-27. Arlington will slowly build during the day, hitting the 26-30 range after 2pm.
That low pressure system and front move onshore tonight and tomorrow and high pressure builds quickly offshore and then inland. We’ll start the day with 15-18 from Viento to Hood River and 5-10 further east and west. Locations east of Hood River will go calm by midday while the Stevenson to Mosier stretch drops to 12-15 as the day progresses.
High pressure dominates the picture on the weekend. The current run of the GFS suggests easterlies at 20-25 near Stevenson and Rooster on Friday and Saturday with westerlies at 7-10 Sunday morning and 16-19 Sunday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
Seems like I’m headed off on a lot of all-day adventures these days. This morning, for example, despite the windy forecast, I’m headed to a daylong meditation retreat in Underwood at the Community Center. I was convinced to go by an experience last night while these two internationally-recognized women were teaching.
I found role models. In the adventures sports world, it can be hard for us women to find role models like us. Take the current controversy over Billbong’s website: a photo of a man surfing, doing a huge off-the-lip (or whatever you call it in surfing). The women’s homepage has an underfed, bikini-clad model arching her back, sex-symboling the beach away. OFFENSIVE!
The power of role models cannot be understated. When we find people to admire, people who look like us, play hard like us, and think like us, we are reassure that we are on the right path. Or we can be dragged on to a “wrong” path, so it’s important to develop wisdom about which is which (but I digress). So, on one hand, we need role models to inspire and encourage us.
On the other hand, when we are talented in our given field, we serve as role models for others. Without knowing it, we might inspire someone to train harder, work harder, study harder, etc. Jocelyn Hrkach was that person for me. For this generation of sailors, I can’t help but think of ripper windsurfer Rob Warwick, whose approachability and friendly demeanor towards everyone makes him a fabulous ambassador for the sport of windsurfing.
Find people who inspire you, so you can continue to grow. Take care with yourself, because you may be inspiring others to grow. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week
Road and Mountain Biking
Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
Have an awesome day today!
