Today’s going to be yet another windy day in a very windy Gorge summer. A deep marine layer sits over western Oregon, high pressure is out in the Pacific, and a trough of low pressure is shifting toward us. Those first two are great, the third not so awesome; it’ll lend a bit of gustiness to the wind’s performance today. That said, our morning gradients are solid: .08 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc) and .60 (eph-dls). Also solid is the marine deck, sending little fluffy clouds past Hood River. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Much like yesterday, the strongest wind will shift east today. Expect 16-19 pretty much everywhere this morning. We’ll see a slow increase in speeds, topping out at 24-28 from Mosier to Doug’s this afternoon. Beaches near Hood River will likely see gusty 20-23 max, as the marine layer affects the wind. Models predict only 20-23 at the Maryhill stretch this afternoon with 13-16 at Arlington, but I think we’ll see a little more than that out there. River water temp is 72 degrees.
Tomorrow starts off with a deeper marine layer, which will definitely shift the wind eastward. In addition, the low pressure trough I mentioned earlier will shift east in the afternoon, also helping eastern Gorge wind. Expect 12-15 everywhere (except maybe Stevenson) tomorrow morning. As the day goes on, we’ll see the wind max out at 25-29 from Lyle to Rufus with just a touch less at Arlington.

Friday sees 12-15 from Viento to Doug’s to start the day. As a frontal system approaches in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 23-26, likely steadiest at Stevenson. As of right now (here’s your long-term-don’t-believe-it forecast), Saturday looks like 23-26 east of Mosier with a chance of sprinkles in Hood River and Sunday looks like 25-29.

Random Morning Thoughts
I want to talk about flow this morning. No, not Flow Yoga. No, not Aunt Flow. Flow, the optimal state of being while doing. You could also call this being present or mindful or fully aware. Flow is when you’re windsurfing or kiting or mountain biking or writing or creating art or parenting or counseling or doing whatever you do best, while not thinking of anything else. You’re fully immersed in the moment, feeling your mind-body perform at its optimal level.
This is a very nice place to be. When you are in this place, take time to fully appreciate it and cultivate it, and it will show itself more and more often.
In modern times, this state of being became famous through Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s book, “Flow”. In the previous 2600 years, it was known to Buddhism, but because that comes from the East, it had to be repackaged and rediscovered by folks in the West.
Anyway, I really just wanted to include the name “Csikszentmihalyi” in the forecast, because it’s awesome. And I also wanted an excuse to link to one of my favorite dance tunes, Ready to Flow. May your day contain flow.
Gorge Weather Forecast
Get this: more sun is on the schedule for today! We may see some high clouds this afternoon as a trough sags into the region, but other than that, expect sun. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 80’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. Tomorrow looks mostly sunny with a deep marine layer over the western Gorge. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, strong wind late. Friday looks sunny in the morning with high clouds possible in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. There’s a slight, ever-so-slight chance of rain on Saturday. No rainbows through Friday. Slight chance on Saturday.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went jogging in Post Canyon yesterday, and it’s dry as a bone in there. It’s so dry that I saw dust, not ball bearings! In other news, Kreps and SDS lands remain closed (Hospital Hill and Whoopee), and everything else is open.
