Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The last week of the year on Mt. Hood closes out with not much to talk about, but things perk up as we push into the first week of the new year. Cooler temps arrive sometime between the 1st and the 4th, and wetter weather is forecast to join the cool temps starting around the 5th, 6th, or 7th. While nothing is guaranteed this far out, the forecast generally looks better 7-10 days out than it has looked so far this season. 14 day probabilities from the Euro: 10th percentile: 6”, 50% percentile: 19.5”, 90% percentile: 35”. In the meantime…

Wednesday brings a bit of rain followed by a bit of mixed precip followed by a touch of snow. The snow level will be 10,000′ this morning, 5500′ this afternoon, and 5000′ in the evening and overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day as mixed precip. Call it 1-2” above 6000′ with a trace lower. Overnight, just a trace of snow is forecast. Wind: S 25-45 in the morning turning to SW 25-40 in the afternoon and SW 20-35 overnight. A few flurries on Thursday transition to just-cloudy sky for the rest of the day and night. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind: SW 20-35 early, S 5-15 in the afternoon, and S 10-20 after midnight.

Friday looks cloudy with just a trace of drizzle. The drizzle comes and goes during the day. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ after midnight. Wind: S 15-25 all day and all night. A trace of mixed precip with possible Saturday with the snow level dropping from 6500′ to 4000′. A few flurries are forecast for Sunday. Most of next week looks dry, but models are hopeful for honest-to-god snowfall starting near the end of next week. Snow dances, please!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The windiest east wind winter ever (I made that up) continues… Windiest days this week will be Wednesday and Friday with Thursday a bit light. Easterlies taper off over the weekend and (probably) return by next Tuesday. Let’s look at Wednesday… it’ll be a really rainy one – moderate rain continues near Stevenson all the way through sunset, although it may taper off after 1pm. Pressures to start were 29.71/30.05/30.10 for east gradients of 0.34/0.05. Wind speeds to start: 56 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 34 at Stevenson, and 27 at Viento. Looks great if you can tolerate rain. Midday wind drops to 30 near Stevenson and 35-40 near Iwash. Afternoon: 30ish at both. River flow yesterday was 92-139kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 40F under rainy, cloudy sky.

Thursday’s easterlies will be 20-25 all day at both Iwash Rock and Stevenson. Viento: less, of course. Dry, cloudy weather is forecast with high temps in the mid 40’s. Friday will have some morning rain as far east as Stevenson, but it should stop in the afternoon, or at least decrease into the “sprinkles” zone. Easterlies start at 50 near Iwash and 35 near Stevenson. Expect 40-45 at Iwash in the afternoon with 35-40 at Stevenson. I’m in for that. Sounds great. High temp: 43F under high clouds. As I said earlier, the current forecast for the weekend is pretty light. We’ll leave it here for now. Enjoy!

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information.
