Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

I’m on my second cup of coffee, and it’s not helping all that much. That’s not a great sign for the accuracy of this forecast, but I’ll give it my best shot! We’ll have high pressure and sunshine for Wednesday followed by a ‘deterioration’ in the weather over the weekend. Clouds and rain in the western Gorge will shift the wind to the east, and atmospheric dynamics will make the wind gusty and unreliable.

For Wednesday, we start the day with calmish wind and weak gradients. Flow is 328kcfs, and temp is 59 degrees. Pacific high pressure builds a bit this afternoon and desert pressure drops with heating, giving us slowly building westerlies. By 11am, we’ll have 10-13 at Stevenson. The wind will take its time, but eventually end up at 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles this evening.

An approaching front and low pressure trough start to impact the Gorge Thursday, making this forecast a bit on the guess-casting side of things. The day starts with 20-25 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 to The Dalles. By late morning, we’ll have gusty, intermittent 22-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles and 14-18 east to Roosevelt.

Friday’s wind will be impacted by the arrival of a strong cold front and evening rain. The day starts cloudy in the western Gorge with 5-10 and sunny in the eastern Gorge with 12-15. As this front approaches, we’ll see a short lived burst of gusty 24-29 moving from west beaches to east beaches Jump on it as soon as you see the wind climbing, because it’s not going to last all that long. Timing: 2ish western Gorge, 5ish eastern Gorge.

Saturday and Sunday both look cloudy and rainy west of Hood River, possibly including Hood River on Saturday. This shifts the wind east, with the steadiest, most reliable wind east of The Dalles. We’re a long ways out to be calling the wind. Current GFS run suggests 24-28 Saturday and 22-25 Sunday. The Euro agrees with the general picture but has stronger wind Saturday.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 16-19. Thursday: 12-15. Friday: X. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13 late. Thursday: 7-10. Friday: X. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: NW5/NW5/5-10, W swell 8′ at 12 seconds. Thursday: SW15/SW10/X, W swell 6′ @ 10 seconds. Friday: X/X/X, W swell 6′ @ 10 seconds, rain.
