Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Considering that it’s been warm and sunny on the mountain for a stretch, the forecast for the next five days or so is particularly interesting. Yes, we do have another couple of warm days, but then there’s model agreement about snow, if not about quantity. Read on for the details!

For Wednesday, the mountain will be warm and sunny. Free air freezing level (FAF): 13,000′. NW wine at 10mph goes light and variable in the afternoon. Thursday looks clear. The FAF will be 13,000′. Light and variable wind becomes E 20 after midnight.

Things change on Friday as low pressure moves in along the coast and a weak system moves in from the south bringing light rain. The snow level will be 13,000′ in the morning, 12,000′ overnight, and somewhere between 4000′ and 9000′ after midnight as incoming colder air scours out the warm air in place. About 1/10” rain falls during the day, and another 1/10” rain falls overnight. Wind will be E 20 in the morning, variable to 20 int eh afternoon, and WNW 30 after midnight.

Saturday looks cloudy and snowy, although models vary widely in snowfall amounts. The snow level may still hover around 9000′ before dawn, but will quickly drop to 4000′ around sunrise. Somewhere between 3” and 11” of snow will fall during the day. Another 3-6” falls overnight. Model disagreement, meh. Wind will be WNW 30-35 all day, dropping to WNW 20 after midnight.

Sunday’s models also disagree on snowfall amount, but hey, they agree on snowfall. The snow level will be 3000′-4000′, and up to 10” of snow is possible by Monday morning. Wind will be WNW 20-30 on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

Most of us don’t want to hurt people around us. That’s an admirable quality. Sometimes, though, we take this too far or we use it as an excuse to avoid ownership of our actions. A classic example of this arises in dating, when someone says, “I’m out of here because I don’t want to hurt you.”

This is silliness. Why? Because a statement like that doesn’t articulate the speaker’s truth, which could be any of these things or others: “I’m not into you,” “I’m confused about what I want,” “I’d feel guilty if this doesn’t work out, and I can’t tolerate that feeling, so I’m going to drive you away now to protect myself from what may arise in the future.”

Yes, it’s admirable to want to limit the suffering of others. It’s more admirable to take the emotional risk of speaking your truth while letting others take ownership (and control of) for their own feelings. And when those feelings arise, you can offer support, validation, and a listening ear. Why? Because feelings are just part of being human, even when they hurt. Using someone else’s feelings as a justification for your behavior will likely result in confusion, a lack of intimacy, and the loss of an opportunity to connect. Be brave. Take ownership of yourself and your actions. Be present. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Wednesday and Thursday aren’t all that exciting to talk about, but the next three days sure are! For Wednesday, expect east wind at 15-20 near Rooster and 10-15 near Stevenson this morning. After noon, the wind will drop to 5-10 or less. Thursday starts with E 15-20 at Stevenson, Rooster and Viento. After 2pm, the wind drops into the “light” range. Overnight, the westerlies pick up.

Friday morning starts with 22-25 from Viento to Rowena with less wind under the clouds to the west of Viento and light wind under clear sky to the east. As a weak system moves in from the south, cool air piles into the Portland area, the heat low blazes over the desert, and the westerlies pick up.

First, let me say this isn’t an ideal setup – there’s going to be some instability in the atmosphere, which is likely to make the wind gusty and somewhat unreliable. Next, low pressure directly off the coast will impact wind quality too. That said, models predict a 30 degree temp difference between Portland and Boardman and ginormous cross-Cascade pressure gradients. I think a prediction of 28-33 after 11am is reasonable. Periods of 35-40 at Doug’s, Avery, Arlington, and Rufus are entirely possible.

Rain in the western Gorge impacts wind for the weekend, and disagreement in the models is making it hard to predict exact strength or location. Building high pressure offshore is a good sign, however. I think we’ll probably have 24-28 in the eastern Gorge on Saturday and 26-30+ on Sunday. No promises, tho – that’s a long ways out to be predicting. For now, I’m keeping an eye on Friday.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Expect a sunny and warm day today. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 70’s this afternoon. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Ditto on Thursday. Friday starts off with sunshine and turns cloudy or partly cloudy with sprinkles after 11am. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Nuking west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. The weekend currently looks rainy and/or showery depending on where exactly the heaviest rain sets up.

Road and Mountain Biking

According to Dirty Fingers, Dog River is open and clear of trees. Surveyor’s is open with “several” trees down. Knebal and Eightmile are open. Bear Springs is open and hosting the Bear Springs Trap race this weekend. Post is starting to get a bit dry. Hospital Hill is full of cow poop. Syncline is full of ticks and poison oak. Whoopdee is full of wildflowers. The road biking should be off the charts epic today due to 80 degree temps and light wind. Tomorrow also looks like a good road biking day.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free yoga at 10am at the Fish Food Bank in Hood River. There’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon.
