Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Break out your warm wetsuit and get ready for another round of easterlies this weekend! But first… models are offering up a chance of just-enough west wind today in the Corridor to get you on the river. Yay! Is your wetsuit dry? If not, get on it!

Pre-dawn pressures were 30.33/30.30/30.28 for westerly gradients of 0.03 and 0.02. Models suggest the gradient will improve to 0.09 or so mid-morning for a few hours of 17-20ish from Stevenson or Viento to Hood River or Mosier. It’s somewhat unexpected given the lack of desert warmth; we’re mostly relying on a surprisingly strong offshore high pressure (1036mb). River flow yesterday was 99-160kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 52F under high clouds. That’s 104F total.

Thursday starts dead calm. Like calm enough for waterskiing. Calm enough for those scullers. Calm enough for flat water paddle-ups and dock starts and … oh, don’t forget about the Turkey Twerk dance class at 9:30am at NK Studios in Bingen. Easterlies pick up to15mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson in the afternoon. High temp: 49F under sunny sky.

Easterlies at 20-25mph Friday morning drop to 15mph by noon. Saturday looks stronger. Sunday looks even stronger. Monday starts strong and fades. Weekend highs will be in the low-mid 40’s (after a sub-freezing start) under sunny sky. Looking deeper into the future, this pattern breaks down at the end of next week. Its breakdown brings the next opportunity for westerlies. See ya on the river!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

A little lingering drizzle this morning (it’s Wednesday) gives way to about a week of dry weather on the mountain. Models are hinting at a shift to cooler, wetter weather late next week (just in time for me to go on retreat). My fingers are crossed that the snow will pile up while I’m gone! In the meantime…

Lingering rain – T-line picked up a quarter inch last night – continues until sunrise or so, after which the sky will clear. The slopes pick up maybe 0.1” to 0.2” additional rain before ti’s done. High clouds return tonight. The snow level is 6500′ this morning. The freezing level falls to 2000′ tonight as colder air moves into the region.

Thanksgiving day starts with high clouds and turns clear by mid-morning. Caveat – there could be a few hours of clouds coming in from the east and even a tiny bit of freezing drizzle. But probably not on the precip. Just want to offer that up, just in case! The snow level will be 2000′ during the day, and the free air freezing level will fall to 0′ overnight as 850mb (5000′) temps drop to -5C. Wind: NE10+ early, NE 20 in the afternoon, and ENE 30 after midnight. Friday will be sunny, cold (FAF 0-1000′) and breezing (NE 20+ mph). Warming starts on Saturday, and sunny, warmer, above-freezing slopeside weather lasts through at least Monday.

Models hint at a pattern change late next week, but they’re far from 100% on board. Also uncertain is the 850mb temps, a primary indicator of the snow level. The mean of temps the first weekend in December is right around 0C, indicative of a snow level around 5000′. But.. there’s a lot of spread, about 5C, in the ensembles. In other words, there’s hope for ski season the second week of December, but there’s far from a guarantee. Think COLD, people! And keep dryland training. Have a great day!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
