Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of offshore lows negatively impact the westerlies over the next several days. In addition, SW flow and sub-tropical air combines with incoming disturbances for potential thunderstorms. That’s not an ideal setup for wind. If you want some, you’ll have to move quickly and tolerate gusty, unreliable conditions. And predictions – they’ll be rather unreliable too!

For Wednesday, we have high pressure moving eastward and low pressure settling in off the coast. The door is open for sub-tropical air, and thus for instability. The wind starts at E 5-10 all through the Gorge. Most places calm mid-morning, but the Stevenson area picks up to E 10-15. Afternoon: very light westerlies. River flow is 249kcfs at time of writing, but was 323-362kcfs overnight, so expect it to rise today. High temp: 75-80 and muggy.

Thursday sees an approaching low offshore. Energy associated with this triggers instability and potential thunder along with a possible, but far-from-certain period of gusty upper teens near Hood River in the afternoon. The day starts calm and holds through 11am or so. It’s possible we could see a brief period of gusty 18-22 between Stevenson and The Dalles for a few hours in the afternoon (light/variable east of The Dalles), but instability could stop the wind, increase it ahead of storms, or make it less than predicted. Don’t count on any forecast including this one! High temp: 79F and very muggy.

Friday sees yet another, stronger low offshore. Instability remains a factor as does intermittent scattered sprinkles. Models suggest the day will start with W 8-11 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. That seems likely. Midday wind is forecast to be 14-17 from Mosier to Rufus with 5-10 to the east and west, but instability could knock that down. Same with the model predictions for the afternoon: gusty 18-22 from Lyle to Rufus. With high levels of surface-based instability, it’s quite likely the models will be wrong about the wind, and it’s also likely that thunder will pop up. Things don’t look much better for the weekend: frontal systems bring periods of rain and instability, especially on Sunday. Thank goodness for light wind sports and also for bicycles!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. A good portion of the Eldorado Trail (below the intersection with Riorden Hills Road (near the top, below the clearcut) is closed starting today for at least the next few days. Do not enter that area for your safety. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
