Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are forecast to stick around all the way through the weekend. As of this morning (it’s Wednesday), the lightest day is forecast to be Thursday.

Let’s look at Wednesday. A bit of elevated instability accompanies giant low-level surface gradients to start the day: 0.16 PDX-DLS and 0.05 DLS-HRI (Hermiston). River-level wind is running anywhere from the teens most places to upper 20’s between Viento and Swell. Generally speaking, the overall setup looks decent today. However, low-level instability could affect wind quality from late morning on. Before that happens, we should see a period of 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 from Lyle to Avery and 13-16 to the east. Stevenson will build to 24-27+. Models suggest that the wind will take a dip late morning or early afternoon to 23-26 from Stevenson to Avery with 13-16 east to Arlington. The wind holds at 23-26 in the west for the rest of the day, and the Rufus to Arlington stretch rises to 20-23. River flow readings are quite high this morning: 240-272kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Thursday looks hotter inland with lesser pressure offshore. Westerlies start at 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River with light wind east of Hood River. Late morning: 15-18, briefly, from Stevenson to Hood River. Models suggest the wind will drop to 11-14 in the afternoon. High temp: 91F.

Marine air surges in west of the Cascades on Friday morning. Offshore: a frontal boundary. Will it get close enough to impact the Gorge? Probably. That said… the day starts with Dawn Patrol of 24-28 from Stevenson to Mosier with 13-16 out east. Midday wind dips to gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 15-18 from Avery to Arlington. Afternoon: 24-28 all through the Gorge, all the way from Viento to Arlington, with a good chance of lighter, gustier conditions between Viento and Swell. High temp: 86F. It’s highly likely you’ll be contending with LOTS of downwind floating objects on Friday: the plan is for the Gorge Downwind Champs race that day. It’s also the tentative day for the Laser Gorge Blowout.

The current forecast for Saturday is a 17-20 start building to 24-27. Sunday: 27-31. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout will happen either Saturday or Sunday. Whew. That’s a solid week of wind!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds. The Laser Gorge Blowout is scheduled Friday. Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the (all windsport) Blowout is scheduled Friday-Sunday. The Race Across Oregon starts Friday. The Wind Regatta runs Saturday and Sunday in Cascade Locks.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
