Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Another sunny day of spring skiing is on tap for Mt. Hood today, and another one is forecast tomorrow. The mountain picks up a few inches of snow on Friday and transitions to colder, dry weather on Saturday. The next system is forecast to arrive sometime Sunday or Monday, and models are all over the place with how much precip it’ll bring. Vote for the low end, because this system is probably coming in warm, warmer than we’d like, too warm for snow.

So. Spring skiing. The free air freezing level (FAF) today will be 7000′ all day and all night. Sunshine sticks around all day long. Wind will be light and variable all day rising to SW 5-10 (which still counts as “light”) in the afternoon. Thursday looks nearly identical. Both days see temps max out in the low to mid 40’s at 5000′.

The next system arrives Friday morning. The snow level starts at 6500′, drops to 4000′ by mid-morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 500′ overnight. Models suggest 0.25” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) with this system for 3-5” new snow. Wind: SW 15-30 early becoming WSW 25-35 midday, NW 35-40 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.

Saturday will be clear and sunny and cool. The free air freezing level starts around 500-1000′, rises to 1500′ in the afternoon, and drops to 0′ near Mt. Hood overnight. Models are all over the place with the timing of the next systems. Models hint at a quick/relatively weak one on Sunday followed by a stronger, warmer one on Monday, but we’ll have to wait to see how timing and precipitation intensity shakes out. Looking deeper into the future, we have the Euro voting for relatively dry weather and the GFS leaning towards wetter weather. Let’s leave it there for now. Enjoy the sunny slopes today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A couple days of easterlies give way to a shot at westerlies on Friday. Wednesday starts with pressures of 29.87/29.97/29/97 for gradients of E 0.10 and E 0.00. Iwash (Rooster) Rock started at 37mph, and Stevenson was 20-25. Expect Stevenson to rise to 25 mid-morning before falling to 20-25 this afternoon. Iwash holds at 30-35 for the morning and eventually falls to 20-25 this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 89-136kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 43F under sunny sky in the windy zone.

Thursday starts with 35-40 at Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson. Midday wind rises to 30-35 at Stevenson and holds at 35-40 at Iwash. Afternoon: 30-35 at Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson. High temp: 43F under sunny sky in the windy zone and Nothing near Hood River. Friday starts with E 20ish from Iwash to Stevenson. Easterlies shut off shortly after sunrise and briefly leave us with calm wind. As a cold front swings through and offshore high pressure builds, the wind turns around and picks up to W 21-24 from Stevenson to Arlington. That wind should hold into the afternoon. High temp: 45F under mostly cloudy sky in the west and mostly sunny sky to the east. A calm start on Saturday leads to slowly building easterlies in the afternoon. Models hint at a short period of “enough” east wind on Sunday to get you on the river. Be safe out there!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
