Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and it’s SUPER WINDY! Just to give you a sense, when I looked at iWindsurf, it was averaging 39 at Viento, 51 at Maryhill, and 42 at Arlington with gradients of .18 (pdx-dls) and .11 (dls-psc). River temp is 55 degrees. The strongest wind will be before noon today.

I wasn’t really expecting it to be blowing 40-50, so… hmm… well, how about 30+ this morning, strongest east of The Dalles. You could also try Mosier or Viento for strong wind. Perhaps Swell will kick in, perhaps not. Expect conditions to be very gusty in the western Gorge. Things will mellow out this afternoon: the wind will drop to 20-23 between Stevenson and Doug’s and 26-30 east of The Dalles.

Looking at Thursday, we’ll start the day with W 7-10 everywhere. The wind will pick up to 15-18 east of The Dalles in the afternoon as rain increases in the western Gorge. Friday currently looks light and variable early with light easterlies in the afternoon. Weather models are in disagreement over the weekend forecast, so there’s really no way to predict at this time.

Random Morning Thoughts

Last night’s meditation teacher said something interesting about happiness coming from the inside. I forget his exact words, but it got me thinking about zero-sum games. We see so many things in terms of scarcity: there’s only so much money, so much land, so many jobs, so much love, so much happiness… When our view is such, we tend to protect and hoard, rather than share.

But contentment is not a zero-sum game. The more content, compassionate, and kind we are, the more we can bring those qualities out of other people. By being generous without expectation, for example, we create happiness in others. When we notice the impact our kind actions have, more happiness arises within us. That right there, that’s win-win, not zero-sum.

Another piece of this is that many of us are culturally trained to feel guilty or ashamed when we accept help from others. Allowing that reaction to stand without further exploration does both you and your loved ones a disservice. Giving and receiving both have the potential to create connection and feelings of positive self-worth. Play around with it. If nothing else, no harm will come to you or the recipient of your random act of kindness. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Models keep going back and forth about the amount of snow we’ll receive this week, but a forecast for very strong wind on Thursday has me feeling more optimistic. For Wednesday, we’ll have the potential for light orographic (terrain-enhanced) rain showers in the morning. The snow level will be around 12,000′, and up to 1/3” of rain will fall. The snow level will drop to 4500′ this afternoon and 3500′ overnight. We’ll see .3-.6” WV (water value) overnight for 3-6” of new snow. Wind today will be NW 50 in the morning and W 40 overnight.

Thrusday looks windy and snowy as strong westerlies enhance precipitation rates. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and as low as 1000′ after midnight (models aren’t really in agreement). We’ll see .9”+ WV during the day, for 8-10” of snow. Another .6”+ will fall overnight, for 6-10” of snow (I’m including the high end due to very strong wind). Wind will be W 35 in the morning and W 50 overnight.

Friday’s forecast currently calls for the snow level to be around 1000′ in the morning and 2000′ in the afternoon. Another 2-3” of snow will fall during the day. Wind will be W 25 in the morning and SW 15 in the afternoon. The forecast is all over the place for the weekend, so I decline to forecast.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and it’s nuking windy. Expect temps in the mid 50’s all day today under partly cloudy sky with occasional sprinkles. The wind will fade to moderate this afternoon. 4% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly to mostly cloudy with increasing rain in the afternoon. Temps will be near 40 early and near 50 in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 98% chance of rainbows. Friday looks showery. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light and variable wind. 1% chance of rainbows. It might or might not snow this weekend, depending on which model you believe.

Road and Mountain Biking

Dirt! Dirt! Dirt! Get the good dirt while it’s good! Post, Whoopdee, Hospital, Nestor and Underwood are all great. There are 6 trees down on Dog River and a LOT of trees down on trails south of the 44 Road. I don’t have all the specifics, but I do know that Cook Meadows and High Prairie are basically unrideable at this time. It also looks like maybe things got a bit out of hand with the controlled burn on Hospital Hill last night, so maybe Millenium, front side, and the Bench are not the best places to be today. One other thing: given the super strong wind on Tuesday night into Wednesday, there are likely trees down all over the place.

Upcoming Events

There’s ping pong at 5:30 at the Hood River Armory, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. The Klickitat Marathon and half is on Saturday.
