Wednesday & Thursday Forecast.

Gradients this morning started off easterly, .05 to be exact, but those easterly gradient will switch to westerly gradients mid-morning or so as a weak frontal system approaches the Pacific Northwest. Once the gradients switch, you can expect a slow and steady build to gusty 17-20 by mid-afternoon. You’ll find wind today from Steven’s Locks…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with west wind at 15-18 from Viento to Hood River, and possibly at Mosier as well. As the day goes on, high pressure will build into the PNW, and that will decrease the pressure gradients. Expect a slow and steady decline from the morning peak to 10-13 in the afternoon.

Friday sees high pressure continue to build inland. Combine that with the approach of a Pacific low pressure system, and you have a recipe for easterly wind. Expect light wind first thing Friday morning with easterlies at 23-26 midday, fading a bit in the afternoon. As of right now, we’re looking at unsteady easterlies at 23-26 both Saturday and Sunday morning with lighter wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking I might take tomorrow off. School runs until 9pm in Portland tonight, and I won’t be in bed until midnight. Along with that, I have a big day tomorrow: lots of work followed by a new volunteer gig. Even taking all this into account, part of me feels a bit guilty for wanting a day off.

We live in a world where we’re expected to be engaged and productive 24/7. We carry our email accounts in our pockets, and we have our phones 24/7. In addition, we expect each other to respond to emails and voicemails promptly. We put a lot of pressure on each other, don’t we?

Systems therapy theory says that we engage in patterns with others/society because we gain something from the pattern. Perhaps we feel wanted. Perhaps we feel needed. Perhaps we feel competent when we finish everything “on time”. It’s different for each of us. My point is threefold: one, we’ve chosen to engage. Two, there’s a reason, and it’s good to understand the reason. Three, we can choose to disengage.

When we change our interactions, when we step outside of societally-imposed patterns, we will feel pushback. Perhaps it will come from others. Perhaps it will come from within. Either way, it’s a learning experience; it’s an opportunity for us to study our own reactions. What outside-imposed habits are part of your world? How would you react if you chose to craft a new pattern? Think about it. Observe your reactions. Have an awesome day. Two days, I mean. =)

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues.

Gorge Weather Forecast

This time of year, it’s often dark during forecast-writing hour, and that means I have to go outside to see if there’s Nothing happening. I’m happy to report a lack of Nothing this morning along with a plethora of very bright stars. You, therefore, can expect a sunny day today with increasing high clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late.

Tomorrow may have a few clouds in the morning, but will likely end up sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind early, light wind late. Friday looks sunny with temps in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate east wind. As of right now, the weekend looks partly cloudy with a slight chance of sprinkles.

Road and Mountain Biking

I inspected Post Canyon for you yesterday. Well, the lower part, anyway. It’s still in good shape. Sadly, this being a school day, I won’t have a chance to re-inspect today. I’ll leave it to you. If you’re looking for road biking, tomorrow afternoon looks fantastic with light wind and sunshine. And if you want to give back, there’s a work party at Falls Creek on Saturday. Meet at Bridge of the Gods at 8am.
