Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Wednesday. We’re locked into a very active weather setup at least through the weekend, and that doesn’t bode well for wind on the Columbia. For Wednesday, we start with easterlies at 5-10 all the way from Rooster to Arlington. As a front swings through, westerlies briefly bump to gusty 20-27 east of The Dalles with 10-13 west of The Dalles. That won’t last; by late morning, the wind will drop to light westerlies, then turn light variable, and then pick up to E 15 near Stevenson and Rooster as an offshore low turns the gradients around.

Thursday starts with E 30-35 from Rooster to Stevenson with 20-25 at Viento. The easterlies last until 1pm or so then fade to E 10-15. They’ll also extend all the way to Arlington in the afternoon at E 10-15. Friday will be light and variable in the western Gorge all day. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 11-14 east of The Dalles. The weekend looks rainy and not consistently windy anywhere. Enjoy the rain!  

Mt. Hood Weather forecast

With systems swinging into the Northwest from the southwest this week, the snow level will bounce around between 5000′ and 10,000′, falling more consistently to 5000′-6500′ by the beginning of next week. This will result in upper-elevation snow accumulation. Accumulation for this forecast is given for 5000′ or so.

Let’s look at Wednesday. A weak front swings through. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 5000′ midday, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. That’s probably going to be a mix of rain and wet snow for 1-2” of new. Overnight, a trace of rain falls. Wind: SW 25-45 this morning, SW10-20 this afternoon, and SSW 10-25 overnight.

Thursday will be partly cloudy and dry to start. A band of rain moves in around sunset or a little before. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the evening, and 8000′ overnight. No precip during the day. 0.6” WE overnight. That falls as plain old rain. Wind: SSW 10-25 in the morning, S 20-40 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

The snow level drops from 8000′ Friday morning to 5000′ in the afternoon and 4500′ overnight. 0.1” WE is forecast during the day, for 1” of new. 0.2-0.3” WE is in the picture overnight. That’s another 1-3” of snow. Wind: WSW 15-20 early, SW 10-20 all day long, and SW 15-25 overnight. It appears we’ll pick up several inches of snow Saturday. The snow level starts low on Sunday but rises to 6500′. Most of the accompanying precip will likely fall as rain below 6500′. Don’t panic. It’s still really early in the season. The snow will come!  

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.  

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds stick around all day Wednesday. Sprinkles or drizzle will be around in the morning, but the weather should be dry (or mostly) in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 60’s later. Light westerlies. 47% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be partly cloudy in the morning, high overcast in the afternoon, and rainy overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Light to moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Friday will be drizzly all day. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light and variable wind. 31% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

SDS, Kreps, and DNR lands have all reopened. Regulated use closure has ended and motorized use is allowed on moto trails. Be aware of recent snowfall about 4500′ or so and plan your rides accordingly.  

Local Events

The Columbia Gorge Marathon is October 24th. The HRATS have trail work parties on October 23rd. On October 30th, the Hood River Watershed Group has a work party on Whiskey Creek.
