Gorge Wind Forecast
Today’s Wednesday, and the weather will be mighty exciting this afternoon. Excitement equates to unpredictable wind. After today, though, things stabilize with offshore high pressure, marine air in Portland, clouds in the western Gorge, and strong west wind.
So, for Wednesday. The day starts with east wind at 10-15 in the western Gorge. That will fade by late morning for glass conditions. A disturbance moving in this afternoon will ramp up the westerly gradients mid-afternoon, but… wicked strong thunderstorms will fire up, making the wisdom of chasing the gusty westerlies (20-23mph or so) questionable. I’m not joking about this – these storms could be very strong and you should stay off the river when they arrive. As this disturbance moves through overnight, marine air fills into the western Gorge at least as far as Hood River. Wind east of there picks up into the mid to upper 20’s.
Thursday morning starts off with 0-10 at Stevenson, 10-14 from Viento to Mosier, and 24-28 east of there. The wind builds to 28-32 from Mosier to Rufus in the afternoon. Stevenson and Hood River will likely stay in the clouds with 11-15. If the clouds do break up, the strong westerlies will backfill in the sunny areas. Now, let’s talk about the east Gorge, including Rufus. Unstable air will remain in the eastern Gorge until early afternoon, meaning the wind quality and quantity could be impacted in the morning. Stability increases in the afternoon, leading to better wind. Timing will have an impact on Roosevelt, but it seems like 26-29 in the afternoon is likely.
Friday looks pretty perfect. We’ll have dawn patrol at 23-26 from Mosier to Doug’s. Clouds burn off late morning giving us 26-30+ from Hood River to Arlington. Stevenson will start out at 0-10 and pick up to 18-22. Models agree on the general picture of the weekend with 23-26ish Saturday and 13-16 on Sunday with a 28-32 sort of day possible on Monday. Again, don’t trust those long-range models – they’re pretty useless but fun to look at anyway.
BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 25-29 before the thunder starts. Thursday: 5-10. Friday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13 before the thunder, maybe, maybe not. Thursday: 7-10 late. Friday: 8-12 late. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: X/X/X, W swell 4′ at 12 seconds. Thursday: X/X/20-25, W 3′ @ 10. Friday: W5/10-15/30+, W 3′ @ 10.

Four ride options include an 11½-mile Family Friendly ride (just $10 to ensure accessibility to all families), a 51-mile Trout Lake – BZ Corner – Glenwood Loop, a 54-mile Forest Loop, and a 105-mile Infinity Ride. Click here, now, to get signed up today before the ride fills up.

Road and Mountain Biking
If you want to ride today, do it early or you may be struck by lightning. We should get enough rain this evening to make the trails more better. Still no confirmation on Gunsight, but there was an ultramarthon that ran the trail last weekend. So… if it’s still snowy with trees down, they dealt with it!
