Gorge Wind Forecast
The unusual June (Junuary) weather continues for several more days. Westerlies will be, generally speaking, driven by weather systems not static pressure systems. This will make the wind gusty and rather unreliable. Riverkeeper’s swim map is still showing “Poopy” for the Event Site and Waterfront Park. River current remains very high, above 400,000cfs. Keep these safety facts in mind!
Looking at Wednesday, we have low pressure offshore and high pressure inland to start the day. Result: no wind at all. Cascade Locks could see a bit of nudge to E 10mph midday, then W 10mph early afternoon. As a low moves inland from southern Oregon late in the afternoon, westerlies should pick up, but timing will be everything. We’ll most likely see very gusty and unreliable 14-18 from Viento to The Dalles with E 10-15 in the eastern Gorge. It’s possible the wind could rise to gusty 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles, but it’s far from guaranteed, and probably wouldn’t happen until after 5pm. River flow is 375-440kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 77F.
Thursday starts with a nice Dawn Patrol thanks to the low that moved inland late Wednesday. Strongest wind will be early: you’ll find 23-26 from Avery to Boardman with 10-13 west of Avery. Midday westerlies dip to 18-22 from The Dalles to Boardman and 7-10 west of The Dalles. Early evening wind fades even more: gusty 16-20 from Mosier to The Dalles with 7-10 west of Mosier and 12-15 east of The Dalles. High temp: 71F.
Friday sees a trough of low pressure inland, an upper low off the coast, and a slight chance of instability. Not ideal. A low moving inland late in the day drives the wind higher. Friday starts with 9-12 at Stevenson and 16-19 from Viento to The Dalles. East of The Dalles: not much at all. After 2pm, gradients shoot upward, but that doesn’t necessarily drive strong westerlies on the river. It’s possible we’ll see short-lived and gusty 24-32 (yup, wide range) between Stevenson and Rufus after 2pm, timing permitting. The wind shifts eastward in the evening but remains equally unreliable. In addition, we’ll have rain as far east as Biggs after 5pm. It’s probably best to accept any wind on Friday as a bonus rather than something to make plans around.
Weekend forecasts have been shifting around quite a bit, so let’s leave it here for now and revisit this tomorrow. Have a great day!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Looking at next weekend, we have the Bend Short Track Series race, 12 Hours of Post Canyon, the Alpine Epic Race (Oakridge), the annual summer solstice party at Illumination Saddle, the Pray for Wind Party at Kickstand, the Central Gorge Master Gardeners Tour, the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, and Six Hours of Mt. Hood MTB race.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
