Wednesday. There’s snow coming for Mt. Hood (not sure what happened to that split-flow El Nino thing)

DSC_0292
In a nice twist of fate, it kept snowing longer than expected yesterday, allowing the resorts to pick up some snow before the weather switched to rain. It was raining at 5000′ this morning, but that should change pretty quickly, allowing more snow to fall today. We’ll see the snow level at 5500-6000′ this morning, falling to 4500′ by 10am and 2000′ this afternoon. Between this morning and 4pm, the resorts will pick up .8-.9” water value (WV), for 3-5” of new snow. Another .1-.2” falls tonight, for another 1-2”. Wind today will be SW 25 early, turning to WNW 40 after 1pm, possibly making for slow chairlift rides. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

The snow level will be 1500′ early and 2500′ in the afternoon and evening, possibly much lower. We’ll see .3-.4” WV between the time the snow starts and 4pm, for 3-4” of snow. Another .6-1” WV falls overnight, for 6-10” of fresh, happy powder. Wind Thrusday will be W 25 early, turning SW 15 midday and picking up to SW 20 overnight.

Friday starts off with flurries and sunbreaks, turning sunny for much of the day. Another round of precip starts up around 7pm. The snow level will be 3000-4000′ early, rising to 7000′ overnight. We’ll see up to .3” WV in the morning, for 2-3” of new snow, followed by .6” mixed precip during the overnight period, starting as snow and turning to rain. Wind on Friday will be W 35-40 for much of the day, turning to SW 10 overnight.

Saturday morning, at this point, looks rainy, with clear sky by mid-morning. But that could change between now and then – models aren’t in 100% agreement.

Random Morning Thoughts

The weather in the Gorge yesterday was, well, I don’t want to judge it, but it was pretty nasty. A 34 degree mixture of sleet, snow and rain poured from the sky for much of the day. All I wanted was to be able to go for a run or a bike ride in the woods without freezing my ass off, and it didn’t look like Mother Nature was going to give me the chance.

I decided to ignore the weather, bundle up in some waterproof-breathable outerwear, and go for a jog anyway. Know what? It was super fun. I was warm and dry inside my outerwear, and I was laughing to myself a good bit of the time because the situation was so utterly ridiculous. I mean, seriously, who goes out in a downpour of sleet, snow and rain (other than the Postal Service, of course)?

We get these ideas in our heads that a situation is going to be miserable because it’s been miserable before, because we weren’t well-prepared the last time we encountered the situation, because bad things happened the last time. But that’s just our minds creating chatter. The same situation can have a different outcome every single time it arises.

So, the next time you find yourself saying “no” to doing something, reconsider that automatic response. If going for a jog in pouring sleet and rain can be fun, there’s a lot of other seemingly miserable things that could be fun too (like this meeting I have scheduled today). Keep an open mind and try old experiences without preconceived notions of outcomes. You might just find awesomeness where there was no awesomeness before. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

I had a report from Kay yesterday saying that the Klickitat trail is in good enough shape to ride. If that one is rideable, the Deschutes trail is likely also open to riding. Other than that, forget about it. I did go for a jog on the Twin Tunnels yesterday, and there was 1/4” sleet on the trail. Maybe you could ride to Mosier. Maybe not.
