Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and I had no plans to write a forecast today. But then I woke up extra early on accident, and here is the forecast. Perhaps I will take tomorrow off? Anyway, the general picture for the week is high clouds for Wednesday, snow mixed with rain on Thursday, Snow-then-sun Friday, and a mix of sunshine and partly cloudy sky for the weekend.

For Wednesday, the day will be increasingly cloudy after a high overcast start. No precip. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ early and 4500′ after midnight. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, SW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 30-35 after midnight.

Snow starts up by 7am on Thursday. The GFS keeps all the precip snow. The NAM is most bullish about a switch to rain. The ECMWF is somewhere in the middle, taking 5000′ temps to about 33 degrees. This works out to a snow level of 4500′ with the GFS sounding forecast, 6000′ with the ECMWF, and 6500′ with the NAM. Precip amounts also vary. My best guess is we’ll see snow between 7am and 10am with rain or mixed precip until 7pm, followed by more snow. Honestly, I’m not really certain about any of this, and neither are the models. So, somewhere around 1-2.5” moisture will fall between 7am Thursday and 4am Friday. My best guess is we’ll have a few inches of snow, an inch of mixed precip, then 4-7” of snow after midnight. Wind will be strong, but the southerly component should keep it from impacting lifts too much: SW 30 early rising to SW 45 in the afternoon and turning to WSW 35-40 after midnight.

Friday starts off with snow and turns sunny by midday. The snow level will be 2000′ all day and 1000′ or less after midnight. About .2” WV falls during the day for a couple inches of snow. Wind will be WSW 40 early, W 35 midday, WNW 20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 after midnight.

Saturday looks sunny or partly cloudy. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. Wind will be light out of the SW. Sunday looks sunny and warmer with the free air freezing level topping out around 8000′. Light SW wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s pretty amazing how many people have told me in the last few weeks how much better they feel because the sun has been out. It is a proven fact that daylight helps people combat depression. One of the problems with depression is that it tricks people. It tells them that they don’t have the energy or motivation to do the things that will make them feel better – getting more daylight, for example.

Combating this is, I believe, not a battle of willpower. That’s a losing battle – we only have so much willpower. Instead, moving through apathy and ennui is about faith and hope. Trusting that doing simple things – getting light, sleeping, exercising, and spending time with friends – will help, allows us to just do those things without needing willpower.

This is a shift in perspective from “I can’t make myself do anything” to “I have faith that this will work.” Give it a shot, even if you’re not depressed, and see if something shifts for you. May you be at ease with yourself. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’ll have east wind at 40-45 for the first half of the day near Rooster Rock with 30-35 for the latter half of the day. Thursday starts with E 15-20 and switches to westerly in the afternoon. Most likely the wind will skip the central Gorge on Thursday with gusty 20-26 in the western Gorge (more possible near Viento) and gusty 26-30 east of The Dalles. Friday looks like W 12-15. Easterlies return for the weekend.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Wednesday started off with high overcast sky. We’ll have high clouds all day. Temps will be near 30 early and in the mid 50’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday starts off cloudy and turns rainy by 7am or so. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. East wind early, strong, gusty west wind in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday looks showery to start and clear later. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 50’s later. Light westerlies. 99% chance of early morning rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Given the sub-freezing temps last night, avoiding trails exposed to open air would be a good idea today. Otherwise you risk damaging trails and coating your bike in mud. Try riding Post (under the canopy and only before 10am) or Nestor for better results, aka frozen dirt. Coming up Saturday night at 7pm, the HRATS are holding a fundraiser at the Elks Club. Come see a freeride mountain bike movie and help the HRATS raise money to build a super-sweet pump track. In other news, the movie Ciclovida plays at Rockford Grange on the 16th. That one’s about Brazilians cycling around the country saving seeds. This will appeal to gardeners and cyclists. 5:30pm. Soup first.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday. There’s community yoga, free or by donation, at FISH Food Bank in Hood River at 10am. There’s community meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm and Zumba at the St. Francis House in Odell at 6pm. There’s by-donation YogaFaith (Christ-centered Yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. This Saturday is the fundraiser for the HRATS pump track at the Elks club in the evening. It’s also The Dalles Mountain 60 gravel grinder ride. The annual Rockford Grange Seed Exchange is Saturday from 1-5pm. The following Friday is the movie Ciclovida at the Rockford Grange.
