Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong westerlies are on tap all the way through the holiday weekend into Monday, at least. The strongest of this extended period of big days is likely to be… today! Your forecaster, fortunately, had some use-it-or-lose it vacation time that MUST be used today. So I shall be joining you!

Let’s look at the details: marine clouds have pushed into Vancouver and into areas west of the metro area. A deep heat low remains stationed in the desert. A weak low offshore is heading north and allowing the Northeast Pacific High to assert itself. With 5am gradients at .17 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc), we have all the indicators for a nuker of a day on the Columbia! Expect Dawn Patrol at 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 15-18 east of there and a 13-16 start at Stevenson. By midday, westerlies pick up to the upper 20’s at Stevenson with 31-34+ from Viento to Doug’s. 34-38 is totally within reason. The wind sticks around until early evening in the west and adds the east in the early afternoon; you’ll find 26-30 from Avery to Threemile with 30-35 possible for the Maryhill stretch. River flow is 213kcfs, river temp is 68F (up 5F in the last week or so), and high temps are 92F (Hood River) and 104F (Arlington).

Don’t completely destroy yourself today, because you’ll be doing this again tomorrow! Wakeup wind will be 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 east of there and 13-16 at Stevenson. A weak shortwave swinging through midday is likely to cause a dip to 22-26 and an increase in gustiness. Exception: Stevenson won’t mind at all and will keep going strong. Afternoon wind is forecast to return to 27-31 from Stevenson to Rufus, 23-26 near Arlington, and 13-16 at Threemile.

Does that all sound good to you? How about another strong (but not nuking) day on Friday? Those of you enjoying the river before work will find 25-28 from Viento to Mosier to start the day with 11-14 at Stevenson and 7-10 east of Mosier. It won’t be long before 26-29 is the reading between Stevenson and Doug’s. East of there, Avery to Rufus max out at 18-22 (that may get nudged upward as we get closer) and 15-18 at Arlington (but only late evening).

Saturday and Sunday carry a forecast of 25-28. Long-range forecasts for Monday suggest 27-31. Please, please, please. If you are visiting for the holiday weekend, be aware of the extreme fire danger. No campfire. No tossing of cigarette butts. No fireworks (local municipalities are rapidly issuing bans). Secure your trailer chains so they don’t drag and make sparks. Help us keep the Gorge green instead of on fire. Lastly, enjoy all this wind!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Wednesday: SW5/W5/N15-20+, W swell 6′ at 8 seconds. Thursday: 10-15/15-20+/30-35, NW 7′ @ 9. Friday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, NW 7′ @ 9. Jones Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 8-11. Friday: 13-16. Cycling

SDS, BLC, HFM, DGS, Kreps Ranch, etc will be closing their timberlands to Public Recreation Access starting Saturday, July 3rd at 0001 AM. This closure comes early in the season and means Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed to public recreation. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Trail guesses: Whoopdee, dry; Post, dry; 44 Road, dry. Falls Creek: good. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! New Whoopdee: open.
