Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Wednesday is starting off cloudy on Mt. Hood. We’ll see scattered flurries today. Next chance for some snow is Saturday morning, and then that’s it for a while; the long range forecast looks warm, dry and sunny, with excellent early-morning spring skiing conditions and mush in the afternoons.

For Wednesday, expect clouds all day with a few snow flurries. The snow level will be about 2000′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Up to 1” of snow will fall. Wind will be light and variable.

Thursday looks cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. No precip. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ in the morning and 6500′ in the afternoon. NE wind at 10-15 turns to W 10 after midnight.

Friday looks high overcast with filtered sun. A colorful sunrise is possible. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ as a cold front arrives after midnight. Wind will be W 10 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and WSW 40 after midnight.

Saturday brings a few inches of snow in the morning and clear sky in the afternoon. The snow level will be 3000′. Moderate wind. Sunday looks high overcast early and sunny in the afternoon with a free air freezing level maxing out at 5000′. Starting Monday afternoon, the free air freezing level rises to 12,000′ and stays there all week long if you believe the ECMWF. Hello spring skiing!

Random Morning Thoughts

I was having a bit of an internal dialog with myself yesterday after listening to a radio show I found upsetting. My internal voice went something like this: “You shouldn’t be upset about this, you should be able to handle it, you should have more equanimity…”

The implication of this, and the end point of so many of our internal dialogues is something along the line of, “You should be perfect, unflappable, always feeling positive.” This ‘should’ narrative is, forgive my language please, utter bullshit.

Part of being human is having emotions and reactions across the spectrum of painful and pleasant. I would argue that the more complex and vibrant your emotional life, the more in touch you are with your humanity. That said, being destabilized by your emotions is not a good thing.

Being able to feel things, understand why you are feeling them, and having the ability to let those feelings arise and fall without too much interference is a sign of emotional intelligence and maturity. Telling yourself that you ‘should’ be feeling some other way is a sign that you are denying your current reality. If you can learn to accept yourself the way you are while still working to be a healthier human, you’ll find yourself suffering less. And shoulding less. You can even take those ‘shoulds’ as a hint that growth is possible. May you find equanimity with your emotions. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
