Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

There’s no new snow yet this morning, but it’s definitely coming during the day. Snow will fall through Wednesday night, and then we’ll have clear sky on the mountain through midday Sunday. A stronger cold front swings through out of the NW on Sunday bringing 7-11” of new snow by Monday morning.

Wednesday will be snowy and windy all day long. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 2000′ after midnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 5-6” of standard-issue Mt. Hood snow. Another 0.4” to 0.5” WE falls overnight, for 4-6” additional lighter powdery snow. Wind: WNW 35-40 through the evening and NW 25-30 after midnight.

Orographic flurries continue through midday Thursday. After t hat: sunshine. The snow level will be 2000′. Total snowfall will be 0.1” WE, for just an inch of new. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight.

Friday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 1000-1500′ early, fluctuating to 7000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ overnight. No snowfall. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, NNW 25-30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 after midnight. Sunshine and warmer weather is in the forecast for Saturday with a freezing level of 9000′ and 5000′ temps near 40F. The next weather system arrives Sunday evening. Looks like a great week. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Trailbuilder request: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. So, skip GP and ride the brown pow that’s all over the rest of the trails. Excellent dirt is to be found in the lower sections of Post, on Syncline, at Nestor, on Hospital Hill, and probably at Columbia Hills (where there will be lots of Grass Widows and other early flowers). Remember: it’s still winter, and freeze-thaw is possible. If you hit freeze-thaw mud, please turn around so you don’t do permanent trail damage. Whoopdee is especially susceptible to freeze-thaw. Please avoid it until nights warm above freezing.
