Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
There’s snow in the forecast for the mountains until Saturday afternoon, when a period of rain will… consolidate the snowpack? After that event, it’s back to snow for the extended forecast. Before we dive in to the forecast, I want to introduce y’all to Chris Kastner, Resort Services Director at Mt. Hood Meadows. Many of you probably know him. He’s a bundle of joy, passion for snowsports, and gives the best hugs in the region. He was recently in Baja enjoying a well-deserved kiteboarding vacation when he suffered a major stroke. If y’all can contribute to his recovery, that would be amazing.
Wednesday starts off with a chance of snow all across the land, not just for the mountains. The snow level will be 0-1000′ this morning and 0-2000′ this afternoon (depends on location). About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for Mt. Hood today, for 5-7” powder. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight, for a couple inches more. Wind: SSW 10-20 all day and WSW 10 overnight.
A few flurries Thursday morning give way to partly cloudy sky in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 0-2000′ in the morning and 0-500′ overnight. Just a trace of snow falls in the morning. Wind: WSW 10 in the morning, NW 25 in the afternoon (which could trigger a few flurries), and W 10 overnight.
Friday looks clear in the morning, high overcast in the afternoon, and cloudy overnight. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning and will rise to 6500′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: @ 10 in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight.
Models have been slowing down Saturday’s system. They’re now holding off the rain until Saturday afternoon. This means we could see a nice day on the mountain before a messy night. Rain arrives and eventually switches to snow. We’ll hold off on splitting the WE at this point and just note that we’re currently looking at 0.6-1.5” total for the 24 hour period. After that system, it’s back to cold-enough; 850mb temps stay well below 0C for the extended period. Any precip that does arrive will arrive as snow for the slopes. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
