Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The weather hasn’t fully transitioned to snow yet, but it’s working its way there. We’ll then pick up a little snow into Thursday and ahead into a dry period through next Tuesday or so. Don’t worry. After that, models generally suggest a tumble back into wet weather by next Wednesday. They’re not in agreement on temps, but they do seem to like (generally speaking, again) the idea of snow for the extended period.

Looking at Wednesday, we see the snow level around 6000′ to start. It’ll slowly drop to 4000′ by the afternoon and 3500′ overnight. About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day today. That’ll be part rain and part snow for 2-3” wet accumulation at 5000′ Overnight, another 0.2” WE is forecast for a couple more inches of snow. Wind: W 15-25 this morning fading to light/variable tonight and NW 10-15 after midnight.

Thursday starts with snow and quickly turns clear. The snow level / freezing level will be 3500′ in the morning and 1500-2000′ for the rest of the day. Just a trace of snow falls before the sun comes out and stays out. Wind: NW 10-15 early rising to NW 20-25 in the afternoon and becoming light/variable overnight.

Friday will be clear in the morning with clouds and flurries in the afternoon. Clear weather returns overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and back down to 1500′ overnight. Just a trace of snow is predicted, and that will come from easterly or NE orographic effects in the afternoon. Wind: LTV in the morning, NE 10-15 in the afternoon, and NE 5-10 overnight.

Saturday and Sunday looks clear and cool with NE or NW wind. The freezing level will rise no higher than 3000′ for the weekend, and conditions should be stellar packed powder. Longer range, we’re looking at dry weather for the first half of next week and wetter weather after that. Temp spread in the ensembles is quite large, so we’ll need to wait to clarify the details. Have a great day!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Forecast for Wednesday: light and variable all day long with rain all day too. River flow is 167kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 54F. Thursday sees offshore high pressure and an approaching front. This starts us with 14-17 from Viento to The Dalles with 5-10 at Stevenson. The wind builds to gusty 20-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles, and the quality fades as this weather system nears the coast. It’s likely the wind will drop to the teens near Swell with other locations remaining in the low 20’s. High temp: 53F. Friday will be light and variable. High temp: 50F. Light to moderate westerlies are forecast for the weekend.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling

It’s too wet to ride! Don’t do it! You’ll damage the trails. If you damage the trails, people have to spend time fixing them rather than building new trails for you to ride. If you did ride the trails, the best thing you can do is 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards or 2) show up for every single trail work party that happens this spring.
