Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s another snowy and windy morning on Mt. Hood, but the snow is definitely not as light as it’s been for the last couple of days. That said, the quality will improve as the day goes on. The snow level will be around 4000′ early, dropping to 2000′ or so mid-morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 5000-5500′ after midnight. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm, for 6” of new snow. We’ll see another .8” overnight. The snow level will be borderline for T-Line and Meadows base elevation. At best, we’ll see 4-5” of wet, heavy snow overnight. Wind today will be W 45 for most of the day, SW 30 in the afternoon and evening, and a blistering W 50 after midnight.

Thursday looks snowy and then rainy, with the Euro model calling for warmer air earlier than the GFS model. The snow level will be around 5000′ or 5500′ early, rising to 7000′ in the afternoon and overnight. We’ll see 1” WV between 4am and 4pm, some of which will fall as snow. We’ll see another 1.1” WV or so overnight, and all of that will fall as rain. Wind on Thursday will be W 50 in the morning, and SW 35 around noon. The wind will build to SW 50 in the afternoon and evening, swinging to WSW 50+ after midnight.

Friday looks very windy all day long. Models currently have clear sky over the mountain after 4am, but we could see some intense orographic effects given the wind strength and direction. So, I’m going to wing it with this forecast… The snow level will be 7000′ before sunrise. It will drop to 2500′ by sunrise, hold there for most of the day, and then rise to 5000′ in the afternoon. I suspect we’ll see 3-6” of snow due to orographic effects during the day on Friday, but that’s totally a guess. If nothing changes in the wind forecast, we’re likely to see impacts to lift operations: WSW 70 early, W 60 for much of the day, WNW 35 in the afternoon, and finally SW 20 after midnight.

Saturday currently looks partly cloudy in the morning with borderline precipitation after 1pm. The snow level is forecast to be 5500-6000′ with .5-1.3” WV (models disagree) between 1pm and Sunday morning. Given the variation in models and the borderline snow level, let’s wait a day or two before making a forecast. That said, the long-range forecast does look quite warm through Mt. Hood all the way through Wednesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind at 15-18 through the whole Gorge this morning drops off to W 11-14 after 10am. Expect light west wind on Thursday. Friday looks like W 30+ everywhere in the Gorge. Columbia River temp at Bonneville is 39.4 degrees.

Random Morning Thoughts

When we talk about happiness, we tend to boil it down to an either/or proposition. Are you happy, or are you not? I believe that we do ourselves a disservice by viewing our lives in such a way. Happiness arises from a variety of situations. By deconstructing the concept a bit, we can rebuild it in such a way that we’re more appreciative of the good things in our lives.

Sources of happiness can vary from those which are self-harming (overuse of substances, for example) to those which serve others (generosity, for example). Our work, our playtime, our relationships, our bank accounts, our possessions, and even the weather can bring us joy. Some would argue that internal sources of happiness are the highest good, but I’d argue that we need to start where we are.

If you feel so inspired, take a moment to make a list of all the things in your life that bring you some form of joy, love or happiness. After you do that, spend some time basking in the goodness of your discoveries. If you want to go a step further, you can examine which of those are skillful (self-serving) and which are unskillful (harming you or others). If you want to change things, you can. Or you can just be at peace with where you are. May you be happy. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

We had Syncline for a few days, but with all this rain, it’s probably too muddy to ride. That leaves you with road biking or the gym. Or XC skiing. I hear that’s a good workout!

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm. Coming up this Saturday, there’s a community skin and ski at White River snopark: the Mt. Hood Roundup.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
