Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

There was pretty much no wind anywhere in the Gorge when I woke up this morning, but don’t let that discourage your Wind Johnnying aspirations for today; the wind shall return, and with it, your windesires shall be fulfilled. Expect light and variable wind early (the 5am gradient was .02 E pdx-dls), W 10-13 by noon, and W 22-25 by mid-afternoon. You’ll find this wind initially at Stevenson, and then from Stevenson to Hood River, and then all the way to Arlington by early evening. You may even see 24-27+ late in the day from Rowena eastward.

We’ll all wake up to 24-28+ for Dawn Patrol tomorrow, with 30+ for much of the day. Your only decision will be where to spend your time playing on the river; it’s hard to say where the marine layer will settle, but if it stays west of Swell, you’ll find an excellent Dawn Patrol from Swell to Doug’s tomorrow. If the little fluffy clouds are past Swell, head to the Mosier-to-Doug’s stretch. As for the rest of tomorrow, just pick a beach. For you downwinding people, tomorrow looks excellent. However, Stevenson will likely join in the fun late due to the marine layer, so keep that in mind.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Friday starts off with a nuker of a Dawn Patrol: 24-28+, once again. With a deeper marine layer predicted and a bit of a dynamic weather thing happening, the wind won’t be quite as steady or reliable as Thursday. It’s looking like the strongest, steadiest wind will be all the way from Swell (unless the clouds push too far) to Arlington in the morning, with 28-32 likely from Swell to Doug’s, shifting back to the Stevenson-to-Doug’s section of river in the afternoon with 25-29.

Saturday looks like E 15-18. Sunday starts with light easterlies and switches to westerlies at 20-23 in the afternoon.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/15-20/15-20?, NW swell 9′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: light/light/30-35, NW 8 @ 9. Friday: 5-10/15-20/30+, NW 8 @ 9.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 24-27. Jones tomorrow, 12-15. Jones Friday, 20-23. Sauvie’s today, 9-12. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 9-12. Sauvie’s Friday, 7-10.

Random Morning Thoughts

oakbanner
I was at the community meditation in White Salmon last night doing my lovingkindness thing. It’s easy to fill my soul with love when so many people I care deeply about are sitting in the same room. Part of me wanted to jump out of my chair and give these people big hugs and tell them how much I love them.

Clearly that wasn’t a good idea in the middle of the sit, but I realized how unlikely I was to say the words “I love you” to people who are “just friends”, even if we share the same worldview, the same self-study path, and the same football team.

In American culture, we save the phrase “I love you” for our romantic partners and our relatives, for the most part. That’s unfortunate, because different people receive love best in different ways; some need to see actions, some need words, some need gifts, some need touch, and some people, sadly, can only receive love in ways that feel abusive to the rest of us. (note: I’m pretty sure there’s a book on this, and I’m not intentionally plagiarizing… just rambling).

There are lots of ways to demonstrate love, and only some resonate with each person. By limiting the words “I love you” to familial and romantic love, we deprive people of the opportunity to fully receive and feel love. So, I encourage you to use those three words more often. I love you guys. Thanks for your support. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today is starting out cool and smoky and will finish up hot and way less smoky. Expect temps in the upper 50’s early and the mid 90’s this afternoon. No wind early, moderate westerlies late. Tomorrow starts off with temps in the low 60’s and ends up in the upper 70’s with nuking westerlies all day long. Say goodbye to your garbage cans. If Friday’s your garbage day, you too shall have problems. Expect temps in the low 60’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon with strong west wind. No rainbows for the 24 hour period. The weekend looks hot and sunny.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s calm and cool out there this morning (like you, I suspect: calm and cool), which would normally be a great start to an early ride. However, it’s smoky as an unshowered wildland firefighter out there too, meaning your lungs are not going to thank you if you go hammer out a couple hours on the roads or trails.

If you’re interested in bike touring, Oregon State Parks has a great event this weekend, Let’s go Bike Touring. They’ll teach you how to plan a tour, and they’ll give you some information about how bike touring impacts the planet and communities. You’ll need to provide your own lunch, but they’ll have some bikes available if you don’t have one. RSVP’s are required. Visit the link above for more information.
