Wednesday. Rest day?

Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple of notes from the last couple of days. River flow yesterday was 370kcfs at The Dalles. That was excellent at Arlington, but reports from The Wall said that it was flat. It didn’t look flat when I went by around 5:30pm, but at that point it was blowing smoke. So, we’re still waiting for the ‘right’ amount of flow for the big waves along the Rufus stretch. I’ve also heard reports of excellent waves at Doug’s this past week, with the flow around 400kcfs. Same for the Hatch. Very big waves at this flow. Okay, on to the forecast…

We’re in a transition period right now with high pressure shifting east and a very strong spring weather system approaching the coast. That’s knocked down the gradients quite a bit from the last couple of days. For today, we’ll see up-and-down westerlies at 10-13 from Viento to Mosier this morning. The wind will hang out in that range for the day, picking up mid-afternoon to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 402kcfs and river temp is 58 degrees.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Thursday looks very rainy as a potent cold front pushes into the Northwest. This setup will drive southerly wind on the coast and in the metro area. It will also give us some westerlies near Multnomah Falls and out at Arlington with calm wind in the central Gorge all day. So, you can expect up-and-down, gusty, not-much-wind in the morning, with up-and-down, gusty 13-16 or so in those previously mentioned places in the afternoon.

That weather system moves through on Thursday night, leaving us with a showery Friday morning in the western Gorge. As of right now, we’re not looking at much wind: 5-10 in the morning through the whole Gorge with 13-16 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. As of right now, Saturday and Sunday both look to peak at 10-13 in the western Gorge with light wind out east.

There will be heavy rain in the mountains on Thursday. Definitely not the day to be playing at higher elevations – you’ll get soaked and cold.

Random Morning Thoughts

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately in relation to my own personal counseling came up last night in my monk friend Ajahn Sudanto’s talk at Yoga Samadhi. Because we are fundamentally dissatisfied with the nature of life (change, loss, death, and inequality are inevitable), we often make the mistake of tying our self-worth and happiness into the moment when we achieve a certain thing.

Depending on who we are, this ‘thing’ could be anything – a relationship, bank account balance, paycheck, object, percentage of time we are happy, children… You get the picture.

This. Doesn’t. Work. If achieving a thing is what will make us OK, than losing that thing will make us not-OK. More importantly, when we achieve that thing, we will find something else to need, taking away our feeling of Okness. Or we may even find that we still aren’t satisfied, even when we are grasping that thing with every one of our boom or bar-gripping muscles.

It is not things that make us OK. We are all okay as we are, along a spectrum of Okness that varies across humanity. Picture a rainbow. You and everyone else have a place on it. Some people are in the red, some the orange, some the green. Some are at the top of the arc, and some at the bottom.

For peace to arise, we have to accept where we are now on that spectrum. We are the way we are because of things that have happened to us. We cannot change that. We can, however, grieve the things that have happened and grieve the ways in which we see ourselves wanting. We want to be different, and the inverse of that is the grief that we aren’t. (note: that’s my take, not the Ajahn’s)

We can work to make ourselves better, kinder, more compassionate humans. The trap lies in establishing an end goal, because we will be dissatisfied with ourselves until we reach it. Self-criticism is not helpful. All we can do is take things day by day and be glad and proud of the progress that arises. You are awesome. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I took a short lap in Post yesterday morning, and it was still good. I suggest you ride it today, because the quantity of rain tomorrow will take it off the list for a day or two due to mud. In other news, there’s still no news on Falls Creek. Wasn’t open as of a couple weeks ago. Cows should be gone from Hospital Hill, but remember that the backyard half marathon is Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the weekly women’s kiteboarding get together at the Hood River Event Site from 5pm until dusk. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, Sailboat races at 6 at the Hood River Marina, and community Zumba at 6 at St. Francis House in Odell. Tomorrow night brings the weekly shop rides at Dirty Fingers, but they’ll likely be cancelled due to rain. Check with the shop.

Saturday looks like a great day for a run – both the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon and the Summer Solstass 50k happen that day. It’s also opening day of Sailboat racing season in Cascade Locks on Saturday – take the whole family to the marina for free sailboat rides. I think they may have free BBQ too… ah, if only we could ride our bikes there from Hood River. Soon, soon.

Have an awesome day today!
