Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue through the extended forecast. Low pressure over the inland western USA will insert some gustiness and random rain showers into the wind field. That said, the general picture is high pressure offshore and low pressure inland, and that’s what we’re looking for when we’re seeking wind.

Looking at Wednesday, gradients start at .07 and .05. Westerlies are in the low teens from Viento to Swell with 5-10 everywhere else, eastward to Arlington. It appears the desert low pressure will keep the wind from materializing in the desert today, so we’ll focus on the rest of the Gorge. It’ll take some time for heating to kick in; winds languish in the single digits to teens through early afternoon. By 2pm or so, the wind should climb to 21-24 from Mosier to Avery with 10-13 either side of that stretch. Late afternoon heating takes the wind to gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus with 10-13 east of there and 13-16 west of there. There’s a slight chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. If they happen, the wind will respond negatively. Plus, it’s always a bad idea to combine wind, kites, poles, and lightning! River flow is 203kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 61F.

Looking at Thursday, we see mostly cloudy weather with some models predicting widespread rain. This makes for a very imprecise forecast. We’ll still have offshore high pressure and inland low pressure. However, rain and convection could shut things down. As of right now, it looks like 24-27 from Mosier to Threemile to Start the day with 12-15 in the rainy western Gorge. Some models suggest widespread wraparound moisture in the afternoon for the desert. Some do not. Best case scenario is a period of 27-30 from Lyle to Rufus late morning to early afternoon. The far eastern Gorge is unlikely to respond to the call of the wind. Don’t go there. High temp: 60F.

On Friday, we have a frontal system approaching from the offshore waters. Clouds push inland and stick around in Hood River all day. Westerlies start light in the western Gorge and in the low teens from Moiser to Arlington. Slow build. Late afternoon: 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with 10-13 east and west of that stretch. High temp: 65F. Weekend: moderate westerlies on Saturday and a chance at stronger westerlies Sunday. Have fun!
