Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Cool autumn weather continues. It brings a series of alternating windy and not-windy days. The best chance of a stronger day remains Sunday, but ensemble members still don’t agree on just how windy or exactly what time of day.

Wednesday presents with a trough of low pressure settling over the Northwest. Early gradients were .04 and .05 with westerlies mostly in the 7-10 range. Exception: Viento, as always in this setup, where you’ll find 14-17. By late morning, the wind rises to gusty 14-17 from Viento to Rufus with 10-13 at Arlington and Stevenson. In the evening, the western Gorge drops to 7-10 and areas east of The Dalles rise to 14-17. River flow is 73,700 cfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 59F.

Thursday looks light and variable all day long. Friday starts with light westerlies, less than 10mph. By late morning, westerlies build to 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 15-18 from Viento to The Dalles with light wind to the east and 11-14 near Stevenson. Saturday looks light and variable in the morning with a period of gusty upper teens or low 20’s in the eastern Gorge. Sunday will start relatively light. As a cold front swings through, westerlies build east of The Dalles. About 15% of the ensemble members call for low 20’s, 15% call for mid 30’s, and the rest are somewhere in between. So, put a pencil mark on your calendar, but don’t use a Sharpie. Yet. Happy Wednesday!

Cycling

Please help the HRATS out: sign up to volunteer for the Post Canyon Enduro the weekend of the 15th. HRATS receives money from the event organizers, and that money goes towards building and repairing trails. SDS and Kreps lands have reopened. Washington DNR land is also open now. All other trails are open at this time. Motorized use is still not allowed in areas where it was closed due to fire season. In other news… thanks to last week’s rain, the dirt is nearly perfect in most places. More rain is coming, so get ready for more brown pow!

Local Events

Mountain View Cycles women’s ride is every Thursday, bottom of Post at 5:30pm. They have an all-genders ride at 6pm on Wednesday, end of the pavement on Post Canyon Road.
