Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

The blower pow buffet continues this morning. 14” in 24 hours, 7” overnight, 1” water equivalent. Zero wind. That’s as perfect as snow gets in the Cascades, and you should make it yours of you can. If not, you’ll have tomorrow, when a similar amount of similar powder will be available for you. Cool temps keep the packed powder around through Sunday. We then head into another round of accumulation on Monday. Temps with that one are uncertain; the precip could be either snow or rain at this point. As always, we vote for the cooler outcome.

Wednesday starts out perfect from the bottom of Skibowl to the top of the Cascade chair at Meadows. That doesn’t mean all the chairs will be running, but it does mean the snow is off-the-charts epic. It will keep falling today. The snow level will be 1000′ all day and will fall as low is 0′ overnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 7-8” blower powder. Another 0.5” WE is forecast tonight, for 5-7” additional champagne powder. Note: that afternoon and overnight snow is 50/50. Models also indicate a shot at clear sky tonight. Wind: variable to 10mph for the 24 hour period. PERFECT.

Thursday will have the most perfect packed powder groom possible. A bit of snow moves in mid morning, and a few instability-driven snow showers are possible in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.2” to 0.3” WE is forecast mid-morning, for 2-4” fluffy powder. Up to an inch could fall in the evening. Wind: W 10 in the morning, NW 10-15 midday, and W 10 in the afternoon and evening.

Friday will be clear all day. Despite cold temps, the strong sun will likely affect snow quality in the afternoon. Get it early. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500-2000′ overnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, E 10 in the afternoon, and E 15 overnight.

Saturday looks sunny. Sunday looks cloudy. The next storm moves in on Monday. We’re not sure yet of the temp of that storm, but it does look like it will have significant moisture. Wow. What a spring we’re having! Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much to see here. Light easterlies today hold at 10-15 in the western Gorge and 5-10 east of Viento. River flow is 153kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 44F. Thursday starts with E 10-15 at Cascade Locks and 5-10mph at Rooster. High temp: 47F. The wind goes calm in the afternoon. Friday will be calm then light easterly. High temp: 50F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Drizzly weather continues today. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Chance of thunder, snow, and hail in the afternoon. Light easterlies. 45% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be cold and clear early followed by a little light snow and then sunny later. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 40’s later. Light easterlies turn calm in the afternoon. No rainbows. Friday will be mostly clear with a few scattered sprinkles possible. Temps will be in the upper 20’s to low 30’s early and near 50 later. Calm wind. 3% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
