Wednesday. No rest for the windsporty!

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s not much in the way of wind, and there’s not much in the way of gradients out there on this sunny Wednesday morning. With a trough of low pressure off the coast, high pressure in the Four Corners region, and just a weak weather system moving through this morning, we’ll be relying on synoptic-scale gradients and thermal gradients to give us wind later today. We’ll see very light westerlies until early afternoon. The wind will pick up to 7-10 by 1pm or so and 14-17 from Cascade Locks to Hood River by mid-afternoon, filling in at the Rowena stretch of river this evening.

Thursday looks a touch stronger than today, mainly due to the afternoon influence of the offshore low moving a bit closer in the afternoon. We’ll start Thursday with 10-13 east of The Dalles and 13-16 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. In the afternoon, the eastern Gorge wind will fade, and the wind from Cascade Locks to Doug’s will pick up to 17-20. Given the setup, Stevenson will likely have the steadiest wind tomorrow afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

Friday reaps the benefits of that trough moving closer – cooler air in Portland combines with high pressure building offshore during the day for a return to stronger westerlies. Friday Dawn Patrol depends on the inland extent of the low clouds. I’ll hazard a guess that we’ll see 25-29 right off the bat from Swell to Mosier. By late morning, we’ll have 28-32 from Viento to Rufus. Stevenson will see 23-27 once the clouds burn back, and Arlington will likely stay in the 23-27 range on Friday.

Models are bouncing around quite a bit in the extended forecast. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 15-18 on Saturday and gusty 25-29 on Sunday. That’s good news for the free kite/board/foil demo that Windance is sponsoring at the spit on Saturday and Sunday. Long-range-not-reliable models are suggesting continued strong west wind on Monday.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the unfortunate things about being human is that we become inured to even the most amazing of experiences, should they become repetitive. Kiteboarding, windsurfing, mountain biking, kayaking… once they become easy, they can lose the appealing gloss of challenge and passion.

We can combat this by switching things up. Heading to a new beach, a new trail, a new ride, trying a new trick… all of these (and more) can serve to give our passions new life. Same goes for relationships, right? Getting stuck in the same old routine can sap the joy from the best of partnerships.

So, mix it up. Go somewhere new. Try a new trick. Do something silly, just to break up the routine. You might be surprised how far into your life the ripples expand. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s sunny and lovely out there this morning. Other than a slight chance of a t-cloud or t-shower this afternoon, we’ll have just another summer day. Temps will be near 60 this morning and 90 this afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks nearly identical to today with a slightly higher chance of some afternoon t-clouds. Friday looks cooler. We might see a few marine clouds early followed by full sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have nothing new to report today. That said, this morning looks great for road biking – cool weather, sunshine, and light wind. Tomorrow morning also looks light enough to make for a nice morning ride. Just get out before the mercury hits 90 in the afternoon!

Upcoming Events

Tonight’s events include the ladies kite and windsurf night at the event site starting at 5. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, sailboat races at the Hood River Marina at 6, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.

Tomorrow’s highlights include $5 community sailing in Cascade Locks at the Marina, followed by a sailing community BBQ. For this weekend, there’s kiteboard demos at the sandbar both days, brought to you by Windance, and an ebike demo at Big Winds Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!
