Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue in some shape or from for the next five days. No promises on wind quality; several weak weather systems moving through will contribute to gustiness. But that’s okay. Westerlies of some sort are better than westerlies of no sort at all!

For Wednesday, we start with gradients of .08 and .05, meaning you’re going to have plenty of options today. Wind speeds at dawn were in the teens or low double digits all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. We’ll see the wind build to 23-26 by late morning from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 east and west of there. Afternoon wind rises to 20-23 at Stevenson and gusty 24-27 from Viento to Rufus with 12-15 to the east. River flow is 139kcfs and temp is 69 degrees.

Thursday will be a cloudy day as a cold front approaches offshore. Low pressure offshore dominates the picture, keeping the ORCA high along the CA coast. Westerlies start at 11-14 all through the Gorge. It appears they will dip midday into the upper single digits. Late in the afternoon, as the front approaches, the wind picks up to gusty 12-16 from Stevenson to Mosier.

Friday looks drizzly west of Hood River, so mark that off your list of places to kite or paddle or float downwind on your unicorn. The wind stays light west of Mosier until the evening, when it picks up to 11-14. Better luck will be found post-frontal, east of the clouds. Areas east of Mosier start with 10-13 or so. In the afternoon, they pick up to gusty 21-25 from Rowena to Boardman.

Best guess for Saturday is 13-16, just from Moiser westward. Best guess for Sunday is 24-27 from Stevenson to Avery.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Cycling

8/14: Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Road and gravel news: Due to the Mosier Fire, there is no access to Dry Creek, Osburne Cutoff, Carroll Road, Mosier Creek Road, or other roads in the area. Given significant numbers of fire vehicles on the road, it’s best to avoid the area completely. Motorized report: as of 8/1, Post Canyon is closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting. HRATS will be putting in a short hike-a-bike to Uptrack to allow for riding up to the top of Bad Motor Scooter.
