Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and this looks like the snowiest day of the week. That said, temps will remain unseasonably cool all week, keeping the snowpack in excellent packed-powder shape.

For Wednesday, expect snow all day and night. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. About .5” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 5” or so of new snow. Another .5” falls tonight, for another 5” by Thursday morning. Wind will be out of the SW, which will limit orographic additions to the snowfall. Expect SW 10-15 early, 20-25 in the afternoon, and SSW 20 overnight.

Thursday looks snowy during the day with flurries under mostly cloudy sky overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 500′ midday, 1500′ in the afternoon, and down to the surface after midnight. About .3-.4” WV falls during the day, for 3-5” of fluffy snow. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind will again have a lot of south in it, for no orographic help: SSW 20 in the morning, S 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-20 overnight.

Friday brings additional light snowfall after a clear start. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 500′ overnight. About .2” WV falls during the day, for a few inches of powder. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind will be WSW 20 early, SW 10-15 during the day, and N 5 after midnight.

Saturday brings light snowfall with light wind and the snow level peaking at 1500′. Sunday looks similar to Saturday.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of my monastic friends was talking last night about a podcast he listened to recently. And that provides my jumping-off point for today. Hopefully I listened well enough to not misrepresent him! He talked about how many people have a mental map that defines a good life as a “happy” life. This can lead to dissatisfaction, frustration, anger, etc., when we are not happy.

Reframing that mental map in such a way that we recognize that suffering is part of life allows us to be more accepting of life’s ups and downs. I agree that having a goal of “happiness” leads to all sorts of problems. My personal opinion is that one worthy goal is the ability to embrace and appreciate the depth of our ability to experience life.

While sadness, helplessness, shame, frustration, and anger don’t feel especially good, they will arise at times. Being able to appreciate, or at least be awed by, our capacity to feel can help us tolerate painful situations. Incorporating this with a life view that there will be ups and downs can help us ride them out.

Life is, if nothing else, interesting. It will not always be happy. But we can work (from many different angles and approaches) to decrease our suffering and engage with it in a healthy way when we cannot eliminate it. By doing this, we may eventually be free from unnecessary suffering altogether, if not necessarily happy all the time. May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, so much for mountain biking season! Everything is covered in snow and will likely stay that way for a while. Syncline might be an option, but with the freeze-thaw happening, you’ll do some serious trail damage if you ride there.
