Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Well, that was one epic storm! If you’re heading up today, give the resorts some grace. They’re undertaking massive de-icing projects, and lifts are going to be late. Meadows announced they are opening at 11:55am. Timberline’s website was down when I checked. Teacup is out there grooming the 33” of new snow they’ve received, and tomorrow is Skibowl’s first day of the season. What a day to start with! We’ve got more snow on the way the next 36 hours or so, and then we have a warmer system that’s probably going to switch to freezing rain for a period before continuing to dump snow. That said, we do have some differences in models – some are starting to drag our moisture source (an atmospheric river) farther south. We see this with the GFS calling for 3.5-4.5” water equivalent through the weekend and the Euro calling for 1.5”-2.0” water equivalent. Given the spread, it’s really impossible to make a certain call on how much moisture, so take the numbers below, especially those from Friday on, with a grain of salt. All that said, the resorts are in much better shape now than there were just a week ago!

Snow continues on Wednesday, and so does wind. The snow level will be around 1000′ all day long with temps at 850mb at -5C. We’re expecting 0.2”+ water equivalent during the day, for 2-5” new snow. Overnight, expect 0.2”-0.3” additional WE for another 2-5”. Why the spread? Because the models say one thing, but the orographic assistance from the wind implies way more snow than the model predictions. Wind will be NW 45 early (could affect lifts) and NW 40 (might still affect some lifts) for the rest of the day and night.

After a brief break in the snowfall early Thursday, heavy snowfall returns. The snow level will be around 1000′ in the morning and will rise to an effective snow level of 2500′ in the afternoon with 850mb temps climbing to -3C. During the day, 0.6” WE is forecast for 6-8” powder. Overnight, another 0.7” WE is forecast, for 7-9” more. But wait, there’s orographics, again. Increases those totals by 30-50%. Wind: NW 40 early (could affect lifts – see what happens today for an indication of this) turning to W 50-55 in the afternoon (again, that cold affect lifts) and holding at W 50 overnight.

Things get really interesting on Friday as an arctic front from the NE interacts with a Pacific system coming in from the WSW. Models take temps over the west side up to +2C or higher, and temps on the east side will be -14C. Yes, you read that right. They also do/do not (depending on the model you look at) involve an atmospheric river in this. As of right now, the GFS predicts about 4” of moisture between Friday morning and Saturday afternoon, but the Euro is calling for a lot less. It is likely we’ll see a switch in the precip type at some point. Given the uncertainty, I’m going to hold off on making any precise predictions about the Friday/Saturday time period for now. It’s probably worth noting that there’s major snow and nuking wind predicted for the Gorge starting Friday, so you’ll want to take 26 if you’re coming from Portland. The weather dries out Sunday through Tuesday. Enjoy all this snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A nice day was had on the river yesterday! Westerlies continue today and tomorrow. Things get really interesting on Friday as an arctic front from the NE drives nuking east wind all through the Gorge. For Wednesday, we start with pressures of 29.74/29.64/29.55 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.11. As I was writing this (6:20am), wind was generally 13-16 west of The Dalles and 20-23 to the east. Models suggest Stevenson to Rufus will rise to gusty 22-25 mid-morning before fading in the afternoon. The wind ends the day at 12-15. River flow yesterday was 92-128kcfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 40F.

Thursday starts with 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles and maybe picks up to 18-22 east of The Dalles for a few hours midday. The next approaching system may drive Stevenson-to-Swell up to 20-23 late in the afternoon, but it may not happen until after dark. High temp: 41F with drizzle in the morning, dry weather midday, and drizzle in the evening. Friday starts with W 20-25 from Iwash to Viento and quickly turns around to E 30-40 from Viento EASTWARD, 40-50 near Stevenson, and 60-80 near Iwash Rock. Add in snow and temps that fall to sub-freezing. Nuking easterlies and very cold weather continue through at least Monday. Be safe out there!
