Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

The extended forecast continues to be progressive and wet with lots of snow falling on Mt. Hood. We definitely can’t rule out periods of rain or mixed precipitation, but we’re also not expecting the Pineapple Express. Get ready for lots of snow to accumulate.

Wednesday looks snowy for the entire 24 hour period. The snow level will be 4000′ during the day and 3000′ overnight. About 0.8” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day. That’s 6-8” of dense snow. Another 0.4” WE falls as 4-5” of drier snow overnight. Wind: WSW 25-40 in the morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 45 overnight.

Thursday will be snowy in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon with flurries, and cloudy overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, 3000′ in the evening, and 6500’ish overnight as 850mb temps rise to 3-4C. About 0.3” WE falls in the morning for 3” of normal Cascade snow. Nothin’ overnight, most likely. Wind: W 45 early, NW 25-30 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Friday starts cloudy and turns snowy. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 6000′ when the precip hits, and 4000′ in the evening/overnight. Despite the somewhat warm afternoon temps, it’s likely this system will start as snow and stay that way. About 0.4” WE falls overnight, giving the mountain 2-3” of wet snow. Wind: W 20 in the morning, SW 20-40 in the afternoon, WSW 25-35 in the evening, and W 35 overnight.

Saturday currently is forecast to have light snowfall in the morning and moderate snowfall that may switch to rain overnight. Sunday may start with rain but will turn quite snowy and windy. The next few days after that also contain significant snowfall. Yay! Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies stick around all day. At Rooster, you’ll find 20-25 in the morning and light wind in the afternoon. Stevenson starts with 10-15 and finishes with 15-20. Thursday starts with westerlies at 2-25 from Rooster to Stevenson with calm wind in the central gorge and light SW wind out east. Afternoon wind stays calm central and picks up to gusty 15-18 east of The Dalles. Easterlies return on Friday. The day starts with 20-25 at Rooster and 15-20 at Stevenson. Rooster briefly climbs to 30-35 and drops back to 20-25. Stevenson holds all day.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
