Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of weather systems over the next several days will complicate the forecast and impact the wind quality. That said, it’ll be windy, so make plans to drive around with your gear in or on the car, just in case. For Wednesday, we start the day with .08 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). With a gradient like that, I’d expect to see low 20’s, but models predict the wind will back off during the day as low pressure takes over the inland areas. Let’s call it 10-15 everywhere but Stevenson this morning. We’ll see a slow build-and-hold to 14-18 from Stevenson to Mosier with the wind backing off east of there. River temp is 58 degrees. Flow at The Dalles is 510,000cfs.

A weather system swings through on Thursday morning giving us a combo of high clouds, a deeper marine layer, and decreased high temps (mid 60’s). Teh wind starts at 10-13 near Stevenson and 18-22 from Viento to The Dalles with 10-13 out east. We’ll see a quick build to up-and-down 24-28 from Stevenson to Arlington, strongest from Lyle to Rufus, where there’s still too much current.

Brief high pressure on Friday morning gives way to another weather system Friday afternoon. Models disagree on max wind strength Friday, with the GFS liking 13-16 and the Euro liking 20-24. Wind will be concentrated in the western Gorge. Looking at the weekend, forecasts are bouncing around a lot. Saturday was 24-27 and is now 13-16. So, don’t rely on that one yet. The GFS and Euro both like the idea of 28-32 on Sunday (yesterday’s forecast was 24-27). Point being – the weekend forecast isn’t yet settled, but it does look windy-of-some-sort.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 20-23. Thursday: 15-18. Friday: X. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 8-11. Friday: X. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: 25/25/30, NW swell 5′ at 9 seconds. Thursday: X/X/X, W 4′ @ 9. Friday: X/X/10-15, W 6′ @ 12.
