Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active offshore weather continues for the next few days with a pattern less like June than March. While things will still be active Sunday and Monday, there are hints of offshore high pressure and higher-quality wind for the Gorge for that time period.

Wednesday sees low pressure off Vancouver Island and a weak high along the coast. That’s not much, but it’s enough. Light westerlies start the day. Late morning wind picks up to 13-16 from Viento to Arlington with 5-10 near Stevenson. Wait a little longer, until mid afternoon, and an offshore system will give the wind a nudge to gusty 17-21 from Viento to Rufus (very gusty at Swell, too much current at Rufus). High temp: 74F. River flow: 374-388kcfs. River temp: 55F.

Thursday starts out calm. Westerlies rise to gusty 10-13 late morning from Stevenson to Hood River. The best you’ll find are gusty westerlies at 13-16 (maybe) from The Dalles to Rufus in the afternoon with 11-14 west of The Dalles and light/variable wind east of Rufus. High temp: 80 and muggy.

Friday looks rainy with calm wind and a high temp near 70. Saturday also looks rainy with a shot at upper teens to low 20’s east of The Dalles. Models hint at a windier day on Sunday and potentially Monday as well. If you are going in the river, be prepared for very strong current. Also: the Hood River Bridge will be open this weekend due to the threat of rain.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

If you head out to the trails, you are likely to find Brown Pow. Enjoy! There was an event on 5/22 on Dog River trail, which suggests it may be open. That’s not confirmed. Eldorado has reopened. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
