Wednesday. Last dry, sunny day for a while. Enjoy it!

There’s a lovely easterly breeze this morning, and there’s more reason than one to go windsurfing or kiting. If you live in the Hood River area, you’re currently freezing your butt off with temps in the low 30’s. At Rooster Rock, it was a balmy 49 degrees at 7am. The wind will hold in the…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

It’s unlikely you’ll get on the water on Thursday due to massive rainfall. Just in case you think it’s fun to windsport with a fire hose in your face, here’s the forecast: A strong low pressure system off the Oregon coast turns gradients across the region strongly offshore. This isn’t a gap wind event so much as a synoptic scale event, so it won’t be quite the easterlies you’re looking for. That said, we should have E 15-20 in the morning and E 25-30 in the afternoon. With rain. Did I mention the torrential downpour?

Friday sees an upper level low move onshore (unless the forecast changes) in the afternoon. That sets the Gorge up for west winds of some sort. I can’t guarantee it’ll be steady or forgiving, but I think we’ll see wind. Expect light and variable wind early in the morning with the possible exception of Arlington. As the low moves onshore, we’ll have gusty 21-24+ from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. East of The Dalles, you can expect 26-30+ until sunset. Forecasting beyond Friday, given the active weather pattern, isn’t going to help us much. Let’s just wait a day and see.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Although there’s a TON of moisture headed our way, most of it will do nothing more than wash away the snow we’ve already received. For today, Wednesday, expect the free air freezing level to be around 11,000. rain starts up after midnight. Thursday looks very wet, with 3-5” of precipitation possible on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be around 10,000′ early, rising as high as 12,000′ during the day before dropping to 8000′ Friday morning. Rain continues on the volcano on Friday. The snow level will fluctuate a lot during the day: 8,000′ early, 6500′ midday, and 10,000′ in the evening. The weekend doesn’t look much better for accumulation, with 5000′ temps staying in the low 40’s. Patience, my friends. Patience.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was talking the other day about the complexity of human beings. I suspect our animal friends are also quite complex, but adding them to this discussion would really complicate things. So let’s merely compliment them, let them complement us, and set them aside for a moment.

When we humans strive to achieve a happier experience and better relationships, we work on various levels. We can work with our thoughts, our emotions, our behaviors, our moods, past traumatic events, etc. As we understand ourselves better and shine the light of awareness on maladaptive patterns, we open up new possibilities.

Eventually, though, we run into a problem: many of our maladaptive actions are driven by systems with which we are unfamiliar. This creates blind spots. Take the attachment system, for example. It’s organized around our past experiences with caregivers, and it has a big influence on our interactions (emotional, behavioral, etc.) with others. But if we can’t feel into it, can’t intentionally study it, we can’t change it.

I don’t have a solid answer to this dilemma. One way of working with it is to notice what won’t change and study your experience around that stuck place. In other words, take a meta view and study the larger experience in hopes of seeing something outside your current conceptualization of what it means to be human. You are endlessly complex and equally awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear and f***ing cold out there as I write this forecast: 33 degrees at 6:30 this morning. Expect the day to warm up into the low 60’s. Clouds move in late in the day. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks quite wet, with light, moderate and heavy rain mixed in from 5am on through 10pm. Showers follow. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 34% chance of rainbows. Friday looks showery for much of the day and rainy in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate to strong later. 99% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I took another quick lap on Syncline yesterday, and it’s still in good shape. I imagine Post has dried out enough for good riding. Today is your one-day window before it’s too muddy again, so get it while you can! Another good option would be the 44 Road trails. Plenty of good dirt there too, and with a torrential downpour incoming for the Cascades, you might enjoy a high-elevation day today. In road biking news, you’ll be dealing with the east winds today. That’s fine considering the fact that there’s a lot of rain and not much chance for road biking in the next few days.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday, and there are a few of those free community events today. There’s meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s yoga at the FISH food bank in Hood River at 10. There’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, and there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5. Coming up Thursday, there’s free yoga at Samadhi at 6, free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
