Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Extreme weather conditions are coming for Mt. Hood from Thursday afternoon and through Saturday. Some of you will likely be tempted to head to the mountains. Please read this forecast carefully so you can evaluate the risk. That said, there’s a lot of snow on the way!For Wednesday, expect a sunny day on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and perhaps down to the surface in many areas overnight. Wind: NW 10-15 much of the day. SW 15-20 after midnight.
Thursday starts clear and quickly turns cloudy. Snow starts up midday. The snow level near Mt. Hood will initially be below 1000′. It will climb to 3500-4000′ in the evening. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls before 4pm. That’s a couple inches of snow. Another 1.3” WV falls overnight at 5000′, for 11-13” of regular old Cascade snow. Wind: SW 15-20 in the morning rising to SW 30-45 in the afternoon. In the evening, the wind rises to W 45. After midnight: WSW 30-40.
Friday may be the most extreme weather day we’ve seen on Mt. Hood in a long time. As of right now, it appears that a compact, very strong low pressure system will slide inland along the Columbia Friday afternoon. This will lead to extreme wind, extreme snowfall, and extremely dangerous conditions on the passes (and possibly through the Gorge).
The snow level will be 3500-4000′ Friday morning. Between 1pm and 4pm, it may rise as high as 6000′-6500′ as 850mb temps rise to 2-3C. Evening brings the snow level back down to 4000′, and then it falls to 2500′ by Saturday morning. Between 4am and 4pm, about 0.8” WV arrives, for 5-7” of rather dense snow. Snowfall rates increase to 2” an hour in the evening – we’ll see about 1.7” WV overnight. Some of that may fall as rain or mixed precip or just wet snow for a couple hours in the evening. Setting that aside, we should see at least 12-15” of snow. Before you get excited and head up there, consider this: wind will be WSW 25-40 in the morning, SW 40-70 in the afternoon, and a very destructive W 80 knots in the evening. That’s enough wind for a whiteout blizzard on the passes. It’s also enough wind to bring down trees and cause massive drifts of snow. Do not drive the passes Friday night. By Saturday morning, the wind drops to W 55. That’s still enough to cause white-out conditions.
Snowfall and wind continues on Saturday with the snow level around 2500′. Another foot of snow is likely. The wind will be W 55 in the morning and W 40 in the afternoon. To put this into perspective, W 55 is about the speed at which Meadows starts being unable to run quad chairs, so it will be very windy on Saturday. Avalanche danger will be quite high thanks to upside-down snowpack and extreme wind loading. And again, let me stress: do not drive the passes on Friday night. Looking longer range, there are hints of a Pineapple Express / atmospheric river event starting next Tuesday or Wednesday.
