Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
All you happy skiers and riders are having trouble sleeping, aren’t you? This snowfall is bigger and better than the Turducken you’re planning on cooking tomorrow, isn’t it? It’s better than apple pie or pumpkin pie or even yams topped with marshmallows. Meadows is making lots of noise about having “some lifts” running starting Friday, and Timberline wants you to know that Bruno is open. What will today bring? A few more inches of snow! Expect snow flurries and sunbreaks all the way through Thursday morning, except when it’s dark, and then we’ll have starbreaks. The snow level will be around 2500′ all day and all night, rising to 4000′ after midnight. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 2-4” of new snow. We’ll see another inch or so overnight. Wind today will be W 25 during the daylight hours and SW 25 after sunset. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Thanksgiving still looks complicated, as an incoming system stalls to the west of the Cascades. Despite all the hoopla about massive snowfall, this system looks borderline for snow at 5000′. Even if we don’t see r**n, we’ll see dense, wet snow. So, the snow level on Thanksgiving will be 4000′ early, quickly rising to 5000′ during the day and 5500′ in the evening before falling to 4000′ after midnight.
It’s really hard to tell right now how much precip will fall when. In other words, there’s some guesswork involved here. Let’s go with .5” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 2-4” of wet new snow, possibly mixed with rain but probably not. Models currently suggest (perhaps not reliably) that we’ll see a break in the precip through midnight, followed by another .5” WV. That second round of precip will be cooler, so you can expect 4-6” of snow. Wind will be SW 25 early, steadily rising to SW 40 in the afternoon and turning WSW 30 after midnight. So, total snowfall for the 24 hour period: 6-10”.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Friday sees some lingering snowfall in the morning followed by clouds, fog and light flurries during the day. Another round of precip comes in overnight. The snow level Friday will be 3500′ early, rising to 4000′ when the precip hits, 5500′ mid-storm, and 5000′ on Saturday morning. Again, this is a tricky forecast. We’ll see .2” WV before 10am, for a couple inches of new snow. The second round of precip hits around 10pm, bringing .4-.5” of warmer precip. If it stays snow, which it likely will, we’ll see 2-4” of snow overnight. Wind on Friday will be WSW 30 early, turning to SW 10 in the afternoon and rising to SW 30 overnight. Total snowfall for the 24 hour period: 4-6”.
Saturday looks snowy all day long followed by clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ early, quickly dropping to 2500′ during the day and 1500′ overnight. We’ll see .5” WV during the day, for 4-6” of new snow. Wind on Saturday will be SW 20 early, turning to WNW 30 mid-morning and staying that way all day. Sunday looks partly cloudy with occasional flurries.
Gorge Wind Forecast
We have light west wind this morning, and things looks good for a little more wind as the day warms up a bit. Expect 10-13 in the western Gorge today with 13-16 east of The Dalles. Thursday looks like E 15-20, or perhaps just 10-15, probably strongest at Steven’s Locks. Friday looks light and variable. We’re still set up for a cold but strong west wind day on Monday.

Random Morning Thoughts
Scientific research (and 2600 years of Buddhist psychology) has shown that reflecting on gratitude will make you happier. We’re less than 24 hours out from Thanksgiving, a holiday that could use a little reframing, especially given the trampling of Native American rights, treaties, and land. Whew… that was a lot of my beliefs that jumped in there in a short space, huh?
So, let’s set our politics aside for a moment and reflect on what we have to be grateful and thankful for. I, of course, am grateful for each of you who reads my forecast. Every one of you adds a little bit of meaning and purpose to my life, and that makes me feel worthy. You make me feel like I matter. I’m grateful for that.
I’m also grateful to live in such an amazing place where I can see rainbows while seated at my desk. I’m grateful to be training as a therapist, because giving people a space to be heard warms my heart. I’m so, so grateful that I’ve been embraced as a daughter by Hood River, by the windsports community, and by the snowsports community.
Ha. I feel better already. Now it’s your turn (and we can do this again tomorrow). Grab a pen and paper and take a moment to list ten things you’re grateful for. You can go ahead and post that on Facebook and encourage your friends to do the same. That’ll spread gratitude and happiness throughout your friend circle. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s raining out there again this morning, but despite the clouds being all lit up over Underwood Mountain, I’m not seeing a rainbow yet. Update at 7:57am – we now have a 100% chance of rainbows for today – there’s one right in front of me. Expect mostly cloudy sky today with on-and-off sprinkles all day. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the upper 40’s later. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks cloudy and rainy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light easterlies. 21% chance of rainbows. Friday may bring sprinkles early and will likely be rainy overnight, but the day will be mostly dry. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 3% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
No, really. Post Canyon and Whoopdee are too muddy to ride. Consider riding the gravel roads instead. There are lots of them around here, and you won’t be doing trail damage if you ride on the roads.
Upcoming Events
It’s Wednesday morning. Normally there’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15, but it’s canceled today. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm.
Thursday is the annual Turkey Trot, benefiting the Mosier Community School. The run takes place Thursday morning on the Twin Tunnels Trail, Hood River side. More information is available here, including the fact that you get $5 off registration if you ride your bike or run to the event.
