Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Late summer is doing its late summer thing – the wind is going to switch around and back and forth over the next few days. Models hint that we’ll be back to “just enough” westerlies on Sunday to get you on the river. Quite a bit of variety is present in the ensembles for Monday, but they’re pretty consistent on bring a big cooldown and a big wind day on Tuesday. Of sooner import: mark your calendars for Sunday the 27th, the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser and community shred session at Northwave. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Not much is happening on Wednesday. Same goes for the next couple of days, which means I might just take a day off. Or I might not. Before I forget, we’ve got this fundraiser for Maui Fire Relief on Sunday, and we’re looking for more donations for raffle prizes. If you’ve got something worthy to donate, we’d love to bring you on the team and help promote your biz! Shoot me an email, please! Back to the forecast, Wednesday starts with pressures of 30.14/30.11/30.10 for gradients of 0.03 and 0.01. In other words, not much! Westerlies were in the low double digits from Viento to the Hatchery to start the day. Models knock the wind down to the single digits midday before bringing back 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier mid to late afternoon. Out east: less than 10mph. River flow yesterday was 84-145kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 79F.

Willamette Valley temps outpace Gorge temps on Thursday, combine with a low offshore, and turn the gradient easterly. The day kicks off with E 15 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento. Mid-morning, easterlies pick up to 20-25 from Iwash to Viento. They’ll drop to 15mph in the afternoon for that stretch of the river. Hood River to Mosier rises to 5-10 in the afternoon, and areas east of Lyle pick up to 10-15. High temp:87F. Late in the day, elevated thunderstorms are possible.

Those storms stick around through Friday morning, and then they transition to surface-based thunderstorms from mid-morning on. Showers are possible. Interspersed along all the interesting weather will be east wind. Inconsistent east wind. It’ll start at 15ish mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento, rise to gusty 20-30 as a low approaches, and drop to 10-15 in the afternoon. It’s probably best not to bank on this day, as it’s going to be messy.

Atmospheric instability sticks around through the weekend, which makes the wind a bit tricky to predict. As of right now, Saturday looks to start light/variable and rise to the low teens in the afternoon. Sunday looks to start in the mid teens and rise to the upper teens or low 20’s. That means we should have wind for the Maui-supporting community shred session at Northwave in the afternoon. And BBQ. And raffle. Make plans to join the fun! Have a great day today!

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
