Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! It’s been a rough few days at my J-O-B, and I slept in today to make up for it. That’s okay – not much is happening out there right now. We will see enough wind today, most likely, to get you on the water. That trend continues at least through Sunday. Ensembles knock the wind down a bit Monday and Tuesday. After that: too much uncertainty to make a call.

Wednesday (it took me a bit to figure out what day it is!) starts out with pressures of 30.16/30.11/30.12 for gradients of 0.05 and E0.01. Stay west today. Also of note: SR-14 is now closed east of the intersection with 97 due to the Newell Road Fire. That takes Roosevelt out of the picture for the near-term future. You won’t need Roosevelt or any of the eastern Gorge today, but you likely will over the next few days! Today holds the wind at 12-15ish from Viento to Swell for the morning hours. Wait until early to mid afternoon, and we should see gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind should fill in to Doug’s mid to late afternoon. River flow yesterday was 110-174kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Hotter weather in the desert on Thursday afternoon leads to stronger wind than Wednesday. A weak offshore disturbance slowly slides south along the coast, and this could impact wind quality. The day starts with 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with 10ish at Stevenson and 12-15 east of Mosier to Arlington. Mid-morning wind rises to 23-26 from Stevenson to Hood River with 20-23 at Rufus and 15-18 near Arlington. Afternoon: the wind drops to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier and rises to gusty 23-26 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp for Hood River: 80. East: upper 80’s. Food rating for Amayah’s (at Biggs) should you go to the Maryhill stretch of river: five out of five stars.

Friday sees a deeper marine layer, but this is offset by slightly less heat out east. Max wind will likely be 22-25 from Viento to Mosier in the morning and Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon. Stevenson will take a while, as the clouds will linger. It should rise to 17-20 or so. High temp: 80ish.

Ensembles indicate that Saturday and Sunday will be the strongest two days of this six-day stretch. Make plans to spend the weekend in the Gorge. I, sadly-not-sadly, will be on a meditation retreat. Hopefully my housesitters enjoy wind and wind sports! Have a wonderful day today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands will close due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
