Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s overcast and chilly to start the day on the slopes, and the forecast is for just a wee little bit of snow today. We’ll have a couple more days with a touch of snowfall through the weekend. Our attention then turns to the early part of next week. A powerful system takes aim at Vancouver Island, but it looks big enough and strong enough to send some moisture, and some mountain snow, our way.

For Wednesday, expect cloudy sky this morning, clear sky midday, and light snowfall again this evening as a weak system moves through. The snow level will be 4000′ this morning, 3000′ this afternoon, and the freezing level will be 1000-1500′ near Mt. Hood tonight. During the day, 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for up to an inch of new. Up to 0.2” WE is forecast tonight, for a couple inches more. Wind will be W 25 this morning, WNW 20-30 this afternoon, and NW 20-30 overnight.

Thursday looks clear. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. A few snow flurries are possible thanks to orographics, but models are really pointing at a mostly clear day. Wind: NW 20-30 in the morning, NW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Friday will be clear in the morning with lower-level clouds in the afternoon. Some moisture is forecast, but the moist layer won’t be all that deep. It’s possible we’ll see rain and then a switch to freezing rain rather than snow. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. Just 0.1” WE is forecast, and will probably not give us the equivalent 1” of snow. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

Saturday looks partly cloudy with the freezing level maxing out around 5000′. Sunday starts sunny and turns cloudy with light snowfall overnight. We then cross our fingers for the right combo of temperature, wind, and moisture on Monday. Have a great week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like westerlies are going to stick around for the long haul. On Wednesday, we’ll have some drizzle in the western Gorge in the morning and evening; you’ll want to head east for best results. The day starts with gradients of .09 and .11 with westerlies in the 20-30 range all through the Gorge. They’ll back off for a bit and then surge back. By late morning, we’ll have 12-15 in the western Gorge with 24-27 from The Dalles to Boardman. The wind should steady out some mid-afternoon and rise to 26-31 between Rowena and Boardman. River flow is 171kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 54F.

Thursday starts with 5-10 and clouds in the western Gorge with 10-13 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind rises to 13-16 from Viento to The Dalles with 7-10 to the east and also at Stevenson. High temp: 54F. Friday starts with light westerlies, goes calm midday, and climbs to 14-17 between Stevenson and Mosier in the afternoon. The Lyle area will max out at 12-15 or so. High temp: 59F. Westerlies look to continue in some manner through the weekend.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. Cows are going in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your do on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.
