Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A nice base of snow has accumulated on Mt. Hood, and now an intense gully-washer of a rain event will wash much of it away. The snow level will climb to 10,000′ and mostly stay there through Sunday with periods of very heavy rain. Rainfall in the most intense periods could exceed 0.4” per hour!

Let’s look at Wednesday. Light snowfall on the mountain ends mid-morning and leaves the slopes under high overcast sky. Rain arrives a couple hours after sunset. By rain, I mean a torrential downpour. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 4000” this afternoon, 8000′ this evening, and 10,000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow is forecast during the day. Approximately 3.0” rain is forecast by 4am Thursday morning! Wind: W 15 this morning, SW 10-20 this afternoon and evening, and WSW 35-40 overnight.

Rain continues all day Thursday and tapers off Thursday night. The snow level will be 10,000′ for the entire 24 hour period. As of this morning, the forecast calls for 1.5” rain during the day, but that could very likely be a low guess; the wind will be WSW 35-40 early, W 50 mid-morning, and WSW 30-35 through Friday morning. That should give some orographic assistance to rainfall. Combine that with a LOT of moisture in the air for significant over-performance potential. Just a trace of rain is forecast overnight – the weather may even turn dry.

Rain returns on Friday morning and finishes up around sunset. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. About 1.5” to 2.0” rain is forecast during the day. No accumulation overnight; as a matter of face, the sky will turn clear in the evening over Mt. Hood. Wind: WSW 30-35 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and NW 20 after midnight. Saturday looks dry. Models disagree on rain/not rain for the mountain on Sunday. Another warm system is forecast early next week before temps and snow levels crash. Any precip that does arrive later next week will fall as snow on Mt. Hood.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Rain interferes with the wind for most of the next 72 hours. For Wednesday, though, it’ll be mostly dry. Light and variable wind starts the day. It picks up to E 10-15 from Stevenson to Rooster midday and builds to E 30-35 around sunset. Thursday looks very rainy. Should you want to get on the river, you’ll find easterlies at Stevenson at 20-25 all day. Rooster will be light/variable in the morning and 5-10 in the afternoon. Friday starts with light easterlies at Rooster and 15-20 at Cascade Locks. the wind turns to W 10-13 mid-morning all through the Gorge with the exception of the Corridor, where it’ll be 10mph or less. Afternoon wind could pick up to 14-17 near Viento and east of The Dalles, but it also may not, and that wouldn’t be surprising at all!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds and drizzle this morning give way to dry, cloudy weather most of the day and very heavy rain overnight. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s later. Calm wind or light easterlies. 3% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be extremely rainy early and then rainy with heavier rain in the evening and dry weather overnight. Temps will be in the low 40s’ early and low 50’s later. Light easterlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Rain returns on Friday, heavy at times. It stops around sunset. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 05’s later. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

Significant rain in the last week means most trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. Also note: it’s been snowing above 2000′, so higher elevation trails may have significant snowfall. Be prepared if you’re heading up high.
