Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and it’s already windy out there. Gradients of .14 (pdx-dls) and .09 (dls-psc) have whipped up Gorge wind for breakfast. With marine clouds past Hood River, the steadiest wind will be east of there for the early morning session; you’ll find 24-28 at Mosier, Rufus, and Arlington with 16-19 Lyle-Doug’s. Locations under the clouds will vary: Stevenson and Home Valley will have the least wind early with 10-15. Viento to Swell will have up-and-down 20-26. Hood River, judging by the view out my window, is in the 12-16 range.

These clouds will burn back today, sending the wind into the 26-29 range for Stevenson to Mosier, 30-35 from Lyle to Rufus, and 20-24 east of Rufus to Arlington. River flow is 141kcfs, river temp is 68 degrees, and high temp today in Hood River will be 83ish.

A deeper marine layer on Thursday shifts the Dawn Patrol a bit east and then gives us stronger midday wind. We start with 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus. By late morning, the wind picks up to 28-32 from Viento to Rufus with 20-24 under the clouds west of Viento and 20-24 east of Rufus. If the clouds burn back from Stevenson, the stronger wind will backfill. The wind may become up-and-down late Thursday as an upper low swings down from BC. If you are on the water between Home Valley and Hood River on Thursday, yield the right of way to the SUPs, outriggers, and Surfskis – they’re racing the Gorge Downwind Champs that day and would appreciate you cheering them on.

That low sticks around and moves east on Friday, dragging a deeper marine layer into Portland. Dawn Patrol at 22-25 looks likely from Viento to Doug’s. Afternoon wind looks like 24-27 from Stevenson to Celilo with 10-13 east of there. Current weekend forecast (subject to change as it’s way too far out to forecast) calls for 20-24 Saturday and light and variable wind Sunday.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 21-24. Thursday: 21-24. Friday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 11-14. Thursday: 11-14. Friday: 11-14. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: 5-10/20-25/30+, NW swell 5′ at 9 seconds. Thursday: 10-15/20-25/30+, NW 5′ @ 9. Friday: 20-25/25-30/35+, NW 6′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

Many of us have somehow learned that we need to offer advice to our friends who are suffering. Let’s play pretend for a moment. Imagine that you just experienced a big loss. How would it feel if your bestie offered you advice right now: “You should do (x).” Probably not very good, eh? Or maybe, for some of you who process grief by doing stuff, that actually would be helpful.

Anyway, the safest, most reliable thing to do to help folks who are suffering is to listen. It’s very easy to do this. Just put a verbal mirror up to the person and reflect back what they are saying. You’ll want to use a funhouse mirror, because you want to reflect, not mimic or parrot. For example, if someone is crying, you can say, “This is really hard,” or “You’re so sad right now,” rather than saying, “You’re crying.”

When you try this out, you will notice that people, generally speaking, eventually calm down. This is because you’ve made them feel like they are not alone in their suffering; they feel understood. They feel accompanied. Feeling alone is like throwing jet fuel on the flames of suffering; it’s ten times worse. So, next time a friend is suffering, pull out your funhouse mirror and show them what’s going on. Just be with them. No advice needed. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

Plains of Abraham is open. It joins Gunsight to complete our slate of open mountain bike rides. Get out and get some, and take plenty of water because it’s going to be hot. Trails in Hood River County are now closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Bicycles are fine.

Upcoming Events

Those Gorge Downwind champs continue with shuttles and clinics today. That means you’ll want to be on the lookout for big groups of paddle boats and standup paddlers headed downwind from Stevenson and Home Valley to home base at Hood River. They will be racing from Home Valley to Hood River tomorrow, so watch out for the boats and yield the right of way. If that’s not enough windsports for you, Cascade Locks has the wind youth regatta sailboat races this weekend.

Today’s community activities start with free yoga at the FISH food bank in Hood River. There’s meditation at noon at Trinity Natural medicine. Tonight is the all-levels women’s mountain bike ride from Dirty Fingers Bike shop at 5:30, and there’s kid-friendly mountain biking at Family Man in Post Canyon at 6 tonight. If you don’t have plans for Saturday night, add Harry Potter at Jackson Park movies in the Park to your schedule.
